13 Scariest Horror Villains

BlondeRobynGirl 90 Comments

Horror villains are usually meant to be scary, and some of them are downright terrifying. Villains in horror movies have a way of making us cringe, jump, scream, and even have nightmares. Although most of us will probably not admit it, some horror villains can scare even the best horror fan. I wanted to put together my personal list of the 13 scariest horror villains. These people (and creatures) can be rather terrifying, and I don’t think I’d want to come up against them anytime soon.

13. Candyman

Anyone who can appear when you say their name into a mirror will always seem scary to me, and Tony Todd did a fantastic job as a very creepy Candyman. I don’t know about you, but I definitely won’t be going around saying ‘Candyman’ into mirrors.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

12. Jaws

I highly doubt that there is anyone in the world who does not worry about being attacked by a shark. Logic dictates that it is very unlikely any of us will be shark food, but whenever I’m near large bodies of water, the thought does cross my mind. The shark was pretty scary, and as far as I’m concerned, the theme music made him scarier. I can’t help but have the music start playing in my head whenever I’m swimming.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

11. Chucky

The reason why I think Chucky had to be on this list, is because let’s face it; he’s a doll who goes around killing people. He’s not exactly your average doll. Any doll that can move and talk without batteries and lunge at you with a weapon is a doll you should be afraid of.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

10. Pennywise the Clown

Pennywise, from Stephen King’s It, has given some people a nasty fear of clowns. I do not think that clowns in general are in any way scary, but a clown that lures children into sewers to eat them is rather terrifying. Pennywise will continue to haunt many clown haters’ dreams for years to come.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

9. Jack Torrance from The Shining

I don’t think that Jack Nicholson is usually scary, and to be perfectly honest I’m not a huge fan of him as an actor. When he played Jack in The Shining though, he played the role well. He shows us that anyone can go crazy and try to kill their family. It makes you want to remember to check on your dad every once in a while to be sure he isn’t getting cabin fever. The last thing I want is my father to go all Jack Torrance on me.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

8. Norman Bates

Any man who is that much of a mama’s boy, is someone you should watch out for. And Norman Bates is the worst one of him all. He is completely insane and extremely antisocial, and that’s what makes him scary. If you didn’t become afraid of taking a shower after watching Psycho, you may be incredibly brave, and possibly just as insane as Norman is.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

 7. Hannibal Lecter

He’s an incredibly smart psychiatrist who is a very clever and powerful mind manipulator, and just so happens to be a psychopath. Dr. Lecter has the ability to stay calm and collected in any situation, and that makes him scary because you never know how he’s really feeling! I never want to meet someone like Hannibal Lecter, do you?

13 Scariest Horror Villains

 6. Samara from The Ring

Some of you may not agree with me on this one, but ever since I watched the Ring for the first time, I have found Samara to be very creepy. Anyone who calls you when you watch their deadly tape and says “You will die in seven days” is creepy enough, but then when they actually kill you in seven days? Terrifying, just like the scene where she comes out of the TV!

13 Scariest Horror Villains

5. Jason Voorhees

As we all know, Jason was not the killer in the original Friday the 13th- he came about as the killer in Part Two. Even though this is the case, I think Jason is much scarier than his mother. His mother was killed by having her head chopped off, but Jason seems to never die. You can continue to stab him all night long but he never seems to die. If he does die, he can be brought back by his mother’s voice. Any guy who wanders around the woods with a machete and can be brought back to life by hearing his mother’s voice is a guy I want to steer clear of. I will not be going to anywhere called Camp Crystal Lake anytime soon.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

4. Freddy Krueger

I have heard many people say that they think Freddy is the scariest horror villain of them all, because he kills you in your dreams. They do have a point, which is why Freddy is on my list, because let’s face it- we all expect to wake up every morning. Freddy is a scary guy who I don’t want to meet in my dreams, but is not number one on my list; even with his razor fingers, dirty old sweater and sexual innuendos he likes to make.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

3. Ghostface

Many jokes have been made at the expense of Scream and their killer known as Ghostface. You can make all the jokes you want but they can’t deny the fact that the killer could be absolutely anyone, if not several people, they use any weapon they can get their hands on, they run fast, they hide well, and they are usually killing people because they want revenge. Anyone who wants revenge and decides to go on a killing spree is very hard to stop and that’s why I think Ghostface is so scary. Who knows, you could end up in a Scream film and I could be Ghostface, you just never know.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

2. Leatherface

What can I say about Leatherface that doesn’t prove that he’s scary? His family are cannibals, they’re all crazy (although what cannibal isn’t crazy?), and they like power tools. There is just no way that Leatherface could turn out normal, and he is far from it! The fact that he seems to come out of nowhere, chases after you at full tilt with a chainsaw and will cut off your limbs and salt your wounds while you’re still alive?! That makes Leatherface positively terrifying in my book. If I were the girl who lives at the end of the film, I don’t think I’d ever be able to sleep or travel anywhere ever again; that’s just how scary Leatherface is.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

1. Michael Myers

Michael Myers has always been, and will always be, my favourite horror movie villain. John Carpenter’s Halloween is such a classic horror movie, and with good reason- he made a very scary killer! Michael Myers kills his sister when he’s only 6 years old, spends the next 15 years in a mental hospital and then escapes and goes on a killing rampage. He’s smart, he’s crazy, he loves knives, he never speaks, he wears a mask and he never seems to die. You can shoot him, stab him, light him on fire and he just won’t die. Now that is what a scary horror villain is. Not to mention the fact that he WALKS after all of his victims and he always manages to kill them! That is just too cool (not to mention terrifying) to put into words. Michael Myers is the ultimate and scariest horror villain and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

13 Scariest Horror Villains

There are many other scary horror villains, but nobody is scarier in my eyes than these 13. Now that you have read my list of the 13 scariest horror villains, who would be on your list? Do any of my villains haunt your dreams or make you fear the dark?

I couldn’t have said it better… Michael Myers is the boss!!!

Haha, I’m glad you agree! He is awesome, isn’t he? :)

        Very good list!!

      3. SkullDug Jerry March 17, 2013 at 10:30 pm

While I agree on most counts with Michael Meyers – he is one rockin’ villain, I must put Hannibal Lecter on the top of my personal list. Reason? He’s as close to the real thing that any film has ever endeavored to imagine. I recently interviewed the psychologist that has been invited to interview every high profile serial killer, mass murderer and terrorist in the last 10 years and he confirms, Hannibal Lecter is a very, very realistic composite of very, very bad real life villains. And real trumps fiction any day. That said, nice list overall – very enjoyable – keep up the fine horror blogging!

Thanks for reading and for the comment. Obviously I agree that the idea of someone like Hannibal Lecter is rather terrifying, and I’m not very surprised that his character is a realistic composite of real bad guys. That fact does make him more terrifying though. The psychologist you interviewed sounds like a very interesting guy to meet!

      4. bob101910 March 17, 2013 at 11:36 pm

Good list. On my list I would add these two that scared me a lot as a child (and still do), Pinhead (Hellraiser) and Damien (The Omen 1976).

        • BlondeRobynGirl
          BlondeRobynGirl March 18, 2013 at 3:18 pm

Thank you! I was actually considering adding Damien to my list, he is rather scary!!

      5. Paul Reeves March 18, 2013 at 5:58 am

Excellent list, but it needs the crawlers from The Descent….I’d replace Samara or Norman.

      6. Paul Reeves March 18, 2013 at 6:02 am

I’d also add The Blair Witch…an unseen force that traps you deep in the woods and relentlessly fucks with you…terrifying. Can you go into the woods without wondering if she’s lurking there?

        • BlondeRobynGirl
          BlondeRobynGirl March 18, 2013 at 3:20 pm

The crawlers are pretty creepy, but personally I find Samara and Norman terrifying! As for the Blair Witch, I disagree, but that’s just my opinion :) Thanks for the feedback though, I love reading comments!

      7. Ash March 18, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Hey blonde, love the list. Great fun reading about our favourites of the genre. I’m so happy you included Samara. That is one deadly female! Having spoken to many people about The Ring, I know it didnt hit the mark with everyone but I have to say that film messed me up. It is one of the most unrated horrors in my opinion and Samara would make my list everytime. Happy to see I’m not alone.

        • BlondeRobynGirl
          BlondeRobynGirl March 19, 2013 at 12:28 am

Haha thanks! No you’re definitely not alone. Most people I speak to didn’t enjoy the film, but I find Samara rather terrifying! I just had to add her to my list.

        • Matthew Hagerty April 4, 2013 at 5:12 am

Samara creeps me out, and I never saw the Japanese version

      8. ellen April 3, 2013 at 9:09 am

Classic list, brought all the o.g.’s…touched bases in different genres….what i’m trying to say is a list that everyone would agree and appreciate….::i kneel and bow down:: to your list…thanks for the good read

      9. Matthew Hagerty April 4, 2013 at 5:09 am

Did you ever see Fourth Kind? I find it quite creepy

      10. Amy Tanner October 9, 2013 at 12:09 am

The only one I found scary was Freddy.

      11. haydenshorrors November 15, 2013 at 1:19 am

This is overall a good list , great job! Mind if I make a few suggestions?
The Fisherman (I Know What You Did Last Summer)
        Harry Warden (My Bloody Valentine)
        Cropsy (The Burning)
Moonface (Masters of Horror: Incident On And Off a Mountain Road)

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 15, 2013 at 11:23 pm

The Fisherman and Harry Warden are both good choices! I didn’t think of either of them actually… They both always seem to come out of nowhere! As for the last two, I haven’t seen either of those films!

Me too, he’s pretty scary!! Every time I see Tony Todd all I think is Candyman.

      15. Carmella N Miller November 15, 2013 at 1:28 am

        Candyman, candyman, candyman, candyman, candyman!!!!!

      16. Ben Miller November 15, 2013 at 1:35 am

Agreed with Candyman, but was The Tall Man somehow not scarey enough to make it on the list?

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 15, 2013 at 11:29 pm

Sorry but I’m not sure who you’re referring to! Does sound familiar though…

      17. Bill Van Veghel November 15, 2013 at 1:36 am

Leatherface should have been #1…where’s the wrong turn guys or the killer in Black Christmas?

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 15, 2013 at 11:34 pm

Leatherface is very scary, just not #1 for me personally but I made him #2! The guys in Wrong Turn are scary, I just don’t see them at the level as the killers in this list. To be honest, I completely forgot about the guy in Black Christmas! He is super creepy!

      18. Marcus Moore November 15, 2013 at 1:39 am

Candyman scared the hell out of me as a kid!

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 15, 2013 at 11:35 pm

      20. Jimmy Fratesi November 15, 2013 at 1:44 am

WHERE THE HELL IS PINHEAD…PENNYWISE..???…REALLY…BOGUS LIST…

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 15, 2013 at 11:38 pm

Clearly our opinions differ but that’s no reason to be rude. Personally I don’t think Pinhead is that scary, whereas I know many people who are scared of clowns because of Pennywise :)

      21. Libby Botondi November 15, 2013 at 1:45 am

        It’s Candyman!

      22. David Luke November 15, 2013 at 1:46 am

        Mainstream, but solid.

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 17, 2013 at 10:52 pm

Thanks, any non-mainstream villains that would be on your list?

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 17, 2013 at 10:56 pm

Personally I didn’t find Pinhead scary. These 13 are my favourite :) Who else do you like?

      37. Bambi Blue (@BambiBlue) November 15, 2013 at 7:16 pm

Reagan from The Exorcist. Suuuuper creepy.

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 17, 2013 at 10:58 pm

I know many people who agree with you! Not a big Exorcist fan myself, but yeah she’s pretty creepy.

      38. Drvobradi November 15, 2013 at 8:31 pm

It’s not a bad list, but the title should be changed.
Many of these villains aren’t really scary.
The better title would be ”13 Best/Classic Horror Villains” or something similar.
The problem is that many of these villains WERE scary when they showed up, but because of the sequels, they became parodies of themselves (Freddy being the best example).

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 17, 2013 at 11:03 pm

I actually made the list while mostly thinking about the original films. I know some of the photos used aren’t from the original films though. I do agree with you that some of the sequels are not so good, but just keep in mind the list was created looking at all the originals :) Thanks for the comment!

      39. Josh November 15, 2013 at 8:33 pm

        Pinhead, Pumpikinhead, and Dr. Decker

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 17, 2013 at 11:05 pm

What film is Dr. Decker from? He doesn’t sound familiar.

      40. Jonathan Gonzalez November 15, 2013 at 9:24 pm

What about Mary Shaw, who has no children only dolls? Just seeing her smiling gives me the creeps. Not to mention all the tongues she has on top of her own plus her control over the 100 and something dolls she own.

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 17, 2013 at 11:06 pm

Mary Shaw is awesome! Very, very creepy. I LOVE Dead Silence- awesome film :) To be honest, I didn’t even think of her for my list, but you’re right, I should have!

      41. Gabriel Cervantes November 15, 2013 at 9:54 pm

        Candy Man… Candy Man… Candy Man… Candy Man… … … … CANDY MAN!

      42. tiffany November 16, 2013 at 9:27 pm

        Pinhead was

      43. John Willis November 16, 2013 at 9:29 pm

La Femme from Inside is the most terrifying villian there is. She doesn’t have some unknown motive, its clear what she wants and will do absolutely anything to get that baby. Fucking terrifying.

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 17, 2013 at 11:10 pm

I’ve never seen Inside, I heard it was in French, or is there an English version?

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur November 17, 2013 at 11:32 pm

It is a very popular film and yes its in french. Its considered one of the best modern horror films ever made. I for one did not like it

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 18, 2013 at 8:25 pm

Okay, that would be why I’ve never seen it then!

      44. tiffany November 16, 2013 at 9:31 pm

I was trying to say pinhead was cold and void full of darkness yet intellectual he should have made the list b4 that clown…also pinhead looked scary to me anyways

      45. VanLeo1337 November 18, 2013 at 7:46 am

GREAT List!!!!! I would personally top the list with Chucky, but that’s just my opinion . Just imagine being in a cellar/basement and have that little bastard jump out of nowhere and stab/slit your throat until you die.

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 18, 2013 at 8:32 pm

Thank you! Haha, yeah that’s a pretty scary thought to be honest… Chucky is very creepy! I know someone who was given a Chucky doll as a kid, and once she saw the original film she was terrified of her doll and set it on fire! Hilarious story, but yes Chucky has scare a lot of people! He always seems to be coming out of nowhere! Have you seen the Curse of Chucky that was recently released on dvd? I thought it was pretty good for a modern Chucky film. Thanks for the comment! :)

        • BlondeRobynGirl November 18, 2013 at 8:33 pm

Sorry, meant to say Chucky has scared a lot of people.

      46. Jim B. Vishous November 21, 2013 at 4:24 pm

Going back to your conversation with SkullDug Jerry about the Hannibal Lecter character and closest to a real life happening.
If you’re not aware already three different characters are based on a real life serial killer.
These are Norman Bates, Hannibal Lecter and believe it or not Leatherface… Yes! Yes… and YES!!!! The Serial killer was Ed Gein. If you think Charles Manson was interesting then wait till you read up on Gein.

      47. haydenshorrors November 23, 2013 at 2:36 am

        Also…
The Buckner Family (The Cabin In The Woods)
        Three Finger (Wrong Turn)
Captain Spaulding (House of 1000 Corpses)

      48. haydenshorrors November 23, 2013 at 10:15 pm

        And…
        Matt Cordell ( Maniac Cop)
        The Tall Man (Phantasm)
        The Hook (Lover’s Lane)
        Babyface (The Hills Run Red)
        Pluto (The Hills Have Eyes)

      49. haydenshorrors November 24, 2013 at 5:02 pm

        And last but not least…
        Pyramid Head (Silent Hill)

      50. Kev Davies November 30, 2013 at 8:15 pm

Great list. but chad from chimera will always be my #1

      51. dricki (@k4ylapee) December 1, 2013 at 2:57 am

candy man scared the shit out of me oh my god. i think the thing that made him like 10x scarier is his voice. i cant even put it into words, his voice just sounds like death itself.

      52. caleb December 2, 2013 at 2:07 pm

I agree with the list but no pinhead??? Why not puppetmaster??? He was cool but overall good list

      53. Robbie Higgins February 12, 2014 at 9:55 am

I find alot of these more iconic than scary. Jason is my all time favourite horror villan but he has never scared me. I agree with Jack Nicholson’s performance in The Shining and also with Samara in The Ring. No.2 on my list would have to be Kayako in The Grudge, I don’t even feel safe in my bed anymore because of her. But No.1 is the nameless, faceless killer in Black Christmas, this is one of the scariest films ever made. To make a killer this terrifying with barely even getting a glimpse of him is absolute genius.

      54. Michael kruger March 3, 2014 at 8:19 pm

I said Candyman’s name in the mirror. Nothing happened

      55. John Barnes April 8, 2014 at 2:25 am

I agree with Robbie about Kayako from The Grudge…only horror movie that actually gave me nightmares. Even a poster/photo of that one eyed death stare is enough to freak me out.
