You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies ’2013′ Edition

Herner Klenthur 67 Comments

You voted is a regular series where we poll our readers to decide the pulse of the horror movie genre. We never completely agree with the answers but there is no denying that when the fans speak you can’t easily dismiss it. The latest question we tossed at our hungry audience was what are the worst horror movies of all time?

The answers came pouring in and over 197 movies were nominated by HUNDREDS of votes. We have counted all the votes and have put together the list of Worst Horror Movies based off the votes of you our readers. I am in many ways shocked at some of the answers our readers provided and in the same breath shocked at movies that did not get mentioned but we will discuss that in the comments.

I did make two major edits that altered the outcome of the vote. #6 and #11 on the list were people and since we asked for Worst Movie not director I removed those votes and answers. For the sake of not leaving you in suspense Rob Zombie was #6 and Uwe Boll was #11.

You can debate about that one in the comments below but in the meantime here are the  results of the poll in order from the least worst to absolute worst based off the votes of our readers;

#20 – Jeepers Creepers

I think that the reason that Jeepers Creepers is so highly despised has more to do with the filmmaker then the movie itself but that is just my opinion. I happen to think Jeepers Creepers is a fantastic movie but this is our readers votes not my list so it lands at the #20 spot.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#19 – Jason Takes Manhattan

Jason Takes Manhattan is one of the most hated in the franchise and it’s not hard to find people who shake their heads at its sheer mention. No surprise it lands at #19.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#18 – Human Centipede

The Human Centipede was shocking, disgusting and over the top but I happened to think it was a very creative film. Do I want to watch it again ? Absolutely not! Our readers voted it #18 on the list but I think that as mainstream horror gets more and more watered down we should embrace the unique concepts even the ones that are so crazy they might make you ill.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#17 – Zombie Nation

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#16 – Stitches

I want to comment quickly about Stitches and Zombie Nation mentioned above. I do not believe it is fair to list indie films on a list and REALLY wanted to remove them but I did not think I was being honest in doing so.

With Stitches and the indie flick Zombie Nation just remember the majority is not always right considering the number of people who saw these two films is quite small I am assuming compared to say Jeepers Creepers. My 2 cents.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#15 – Cabin Fever

Cabin Fever I think falls into the ‘you love it’ or ‘you hate it’ category. I for one happen to think that Cabin Fever is one of Eli Roth’s best films but regardless our readers voted it #15 on the list.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#14 – Texas Chainsaw Massacre Remake

Platinum Dunes can not get a break and Texas Chainsaw Massacre was doomed to make this list pretty much from the moment we asked our readers to choose the films they hated the most. I for one enjoyed the remake but when you revisit a classic of the size of Tobe Hooper’s 70′s masterpiece you are assured to piss off fans.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#13 – Creepshow 3

Creepshow 3 was mediocre but worth seeing to me but our readers had a harsher view on things voting it to #13 on the list.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#12 – Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity is the most profitable movie ever made but despite this some fans really REALLY don’t like it. My only issue with Paranormal Activity is how hard they pushed the marketing on the movie on how scary it was. I don’t need a studio telling me what is scary and continuous shots of Joe Neighbour and his wife being horrified leaving a screening doesn’t sell me a ticket it turns me off.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#11 – Day of the Dead Remake

There were two Day of the Dead remakes and lets just say they both were so bad it is outright embarrassing. Hate running zombies? One of these debacles featured spider man zombies that could climb walls. This one deserved to make the list for sure.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#10 – Chernobyl Diaries

I am honestly not sure why Chernobyl Diaries made the list other than it might be fresh in our readers minds. This movie is not a horrible film but it’s also not a great film it’s just a run of the mill tale of radioactive mutants. Think of it as a lower grade Hills Have Eyes… much lower.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#9 – Cabin in the Wooods

I am not going to say anything about this one other than REALLY? Loved Cabin in the Woods myself but it seems like Cabin Fever it’s another one of those you either love it or you hate it.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#8  - Sinister

Ethan Hawke never gets any respect it seems in his genre titles. I am not a big fan of Supernatural movies so I passed on Sinister and can’t comment on its inclusion here other than to say our readers did not seem to enjoy it.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#7 – Fright Night Remake

I actually thought the remake of Fright Night was one of the better remakes to come out of Hollywood. Initially I thought it looked horrid and I hated the casting choices but Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell actually pulled it off in my books. Regardless you all voted the remake #7 on the list.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#6 – JASON X

Jason X is so bad it is awesome. Clearly not everyone agree’s as you voted it #6. If you love cheesy b-movies like Dead Heat you will absolutely love Jason X!

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#5 – Texas Chainsaw 3D

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D was a classic example of a movie that had no business being made and deserves to be at #5.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#4 – Thankskilling

I honestly think that this is another case of people not getting the ’its so bad its good’ but until I see it that is all I have to say.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#3 – House of the Dead

Uwe Boll’s House of the Dead is atrocious but it has grown on me over time going from horrible to ‘so bad its good’.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#2 – Halloween 2 [ Rob Zombie ]

Halloween 2 is an absolutely horrendous film and not only did it land at #2 but it did so with a staggering amount of votes from our readers.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

#1 – Nightmare on Elm Street Remake

Try as I might I could not get through this movie. It is not very common that I turn a movie off but I aborted this film twice each time making it 15 minutes further than the last time. Clearly I was not alone.

You Voted: 20 Worst Horror Movies 2013 Edition

So there you have it the 20 worst horror movies 2013 edition based off the votes of our readers.  I have to admit that some of the choices on this list are pretty shocking while others are pretty valid choices.

It also seems that when people voted they had alot of newer films in mind because in my view there are alot of older films which are much worse then many on this list.

A few that are missing that I think should be avoided at all costs are Alone in the Dark starring Tara Reid and directed by Uwe Boll, Raiders of the Living Dead and Zombie 5. As far as I am concerned they are far worse then 80% of the movies on this list.

If you want to see what this list looked like 2 years ago we asked our readers the very same question in 2011 and you can see those answers here; Worst Horror Films of All Time, 2011 Edition

I believe your board is full of trolls, or full of sh@t.. Take your pick..

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 10, 2013 at 11:05 pm

Please elaborate on why you say ‘our boards are full of trolls’ ?

        • Jared June 11, 2013 at 6:22 am

I agree, Brandon. Out of all of the possible films that could be considered in this category, I find it very hard to believe that most of these could fall in the top 20 worst films ever made. Also, with individuals being singled out when movies are the focus, it is clear that some of the responses were merely malicious jabs at the filmmakers in an arbitrary manner. I suppose the board could be full of trolls when you compare the high voter turnout of this poll compared to ones that have asked for favorite films.

      2. Greg June 10, 2013 at 11:41 pm

I agree that there are more than a couple of movies on there that shouldn’t be. Where is Blood Sucking Freaks?

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 10, 2013 at 11:42 pm

I have not seen Blood Sucking Freaks but for me without question Alone in the Dark belonged on this list.

      3. AychParadox June 10, 2013 at 11:49 pm

The voters messed up BIG TIME for the most part.

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 10, 2013 at 11:55 pm

which would you have put on then list and which would you remove from the list and why?

      4. th13thwolfman June 11, 2013 at 12:00 am

What??? No Blair Witch Project that film is awful. And no Zombie Diaries another crap film. This is filled with nothing but remakes

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 11, 2013 at 12:02 am

I loved Blair Witch and Zombie Diaries. That said Blair Witch 2 deserved a place on this list for sure

      5. Ben Bell June 11, 2013 at 12:16 am

I love the Rob Zombie Halloween films, and know lots of other people that do. Imagine how crap they would have been if they were just copies of the originals.

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 11, 2013 at 12:25 am

I loved the first Halloween that Rob Zombie did the second made my head hurt. That said this list is a vote of a very diverse group so I fully expect many will have their own additions. What would you add or remove?

      6. Marcia June 11, 2013 at 12:29 am

Jason X, I agree. Nightmare on Elm Street remake, I agree. Cabin Fever, I agree. TCM remake, I enjoyed. And that’s my 2 cents :P

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 11, 2013 at 12:39 am

Thanks for sharing your 2 cents :) What would you have added?

      7. Kukri Jo June 11, 2013 at 12:52 am

I’m with you, I loved “Jeepers Creepers” and people are venting on the director for being a POS. I also liked “Cabin in the Woods” but I can’t argue about the rest.

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 11, 2013 at 12:54 am

Agree with you on both films. Loved em both

        • Dennis Francis June 11, 2013 at 1:07 am

I loved Jeepers Creepers and thought the second one was even better.
Cabin in the Woods was another amazing film.

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 11, 2013 at 1:50 am

I 100% agree on everything you said

      8. Dennis Francis June 11, 2013 at 1:06 am

Wow, I can’t believe this this was voted.

Tales from the Hood, Leprechaun in the Hood, Alone in the Dark, Alien 3, Cabin Fever 2, Hostel, any SAW movie but specifically 3D, The Fourth Kind, Troll 2, The Fog (remake), The Devil Inside, Exorcist 2, American Werewolf in Paris, The Haunting (Remake), Blair Witch 2, and The Wicker Man (remake).

List can go on and on. But any of these movies I have mentioned can easily replace the majority of films on this list.

        • Dennis Francis June 11, 2013 at 1:08 am

Oh I forgot to mention Phantoms. GOD AWFUL!

        • Dread World (@dread_world) June 11, 2013 at 1:44 am

But Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms yo!

        • Dennis Francis June 11, 2013 at 7:16 am

          Just no…

          Ash June 12, 2013 at 11:46 pm

Dennis dennis dennis… Hating on SAW again dude, what you sayin?? :P
I am intrigued as to why you watched the first saw, hated it, and then proceeded to watch the other 7? ;)
You secretly like them don’t cha? :)

        • Dennis Francis June 28, 2013 at 3:36 pm

Lol @ Ash… Sadly it became a tradition for me an my best friend each year to go watch it. And the same thing each time “Why the hell did we go see this? Ugh same time next year?”

          Haha

      9. Tiago June 11, 2013 at 1:40 am

I am very glad to see it made the list:
Nightmare Elm Street, TCM 3d, Cabin the Woods, Jason 8, Human Centipede.
I would NOT put anywhere near that list:
Jeepers Creepers, Jason X, Cabin Fever, TCM Remake and Halloween 2.
        Worst movie ever:
        Return to Sleepaway Camp

        • Ash
          Ash June 12, 2013 at 11:49 pm

If you don’t like Cabin in the Woods then you don’t like horror movies. FACT.
          (not fact) ;)

        • Tiago June 13, 2013 at 12:57 am

          Not true.
I understand what that movie was trying to do, I just don’t like it, here is why:
I think the movie is laughing at us, and not with us. something scary?? that’s not what good horror movies are made off. Bad horror movies rely on that factor and not the plot.
I also think that is a very serious subtext in that movie, witch connect horror movies to some kind of pagan ritual, and I am not into that, and really think that it is not the case.
That being said, the movie is very well executed, and did very well what it proposes to do. I just don’t dig it.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil feels much more sincere horror tribute, to me.

        • Ben Bell June 13, 2013 at 10:01 am

I don’t think the Texas Chainsaw film was that good, but surely it deserves to be removed from this list just for the two gorgeous girls with excellent racks…

        • Ash
          Ash June 13, 2013 at 6:14 pm

Lighten up Tiago dude, cabin is a horror treat ! Not to be taken too seriously.

        • Michael kruger November 26, 2013 at 3:58 am

I HATED the cabin in the woods. I think it was very dumb. It also had a terrible ending.

      10. Dread World (@dread_world) June 11, 2013 at 1:42 am

No film on this list is worse than Charles Bands The Dead Want Women or Hellraiser : Revelations…I would pull all of my teeth out with a miniature pick axe rather than watch either one of those celluloid abortions again…

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 11, 2013 at 1:49 am

I never saw the new hellraiser movie and never will because EVERYONE says its crap lol. good call

        • Dennis Francis June 11, 2013 at 5:09 am

Hellraiser revalations was terrible so was the new Children of the Corn

      11. Josh HW June 11, 2013 at 2:31 am

Very strange list to me i would not have included cabin in the woods, human centipede, Sinister at least there are far worse examples of horror than some on this list. Not sure how the people who voted rate a good horror movie.

        • Dennis Francis June 11, 2013 at 5:10 am

Its so sad how Sinister was so underrated. I loved that film and thought Ethan Hawke was amazing in it.

      12. Darren the Nerd June 11, 2013 at 2:47 am

Hey! I was in Thankskilling! Thanks for voting us in your top 20!!! Great website!!!

      13. Wade Winston June 11, 2013 at 4:02 am

OK I…I’m having trouble understanding why Cabin in the Woods and sinister are there. Both are rated well from fans and critics and that’s not that common for a horror movie.

      14. Quagg June 11, 2013 at 4:30 am

Creepshow 3, Day of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw 3d, House of the Dead, and maybe Nightmare can stay. Halloween 2 could stay up there too. But the rest? So much wrong. Wish I could troll as hard as the people who voted this list into existence.

      15. Ray Thillemann June 11, 2013 at 6:01 am

Your picture of Thankskilling is actually from Thankskilling 3.

      16. Mike New June 11, 2013 at 7:38 am

Where these horror fans that did the voting? I am surprised by some of these picks. Jeepers, Texas Chainsaw remake, PA, Cabin in the woods, and Sinister were all good movies. I understand Jason Takes manhattan is on there but that is a cult classic. Thankskilling was a little corny, but I did enjoy it even though it didn’t have a big budget. The NOES and TCM 3D both weren’t that great, but they were somewhat entertaining. I am on board with you in regards to indies. I think they should of been automatically disqualified from the list.

      17. Swim June 11, 2013 at 7:56 am

I didn’t realize how dumb other fellow horror fans were until I read this list

        Jeeper Creepers
        Cabin Fever
        Cabin by the woods
        Thankskilling
        Texas Chainsaw Massacre Remake
        Fright Night.
        Sinister

None of these should even be on that list.

In fact Sinister was one of the better horror movies to come out this year. Its sad when there are truly abysmal horror movies hitting theaters all the time and the good or at least half way decent ones on this list are labeled the worst.

      18. K Hutch (@72nivek) June 11, 2013 at 8:25 am

Found footage genre movies I just cant stand. They do my head in, so they would definately make my list. Remakes are always interesting. Yes some are bad, some are so-so and some are good, but very rarely do they get anything but crap from people as there is always an emotional attachment to the original (its a classic.. I saw it in my youth… etc).

      19. Locksley Velociraptor June 11, 2013 at 12:47 pm

Perplexed at some of these. The remakes I get the impression that it’s fans being a bit precious? They remade it so now it’s terrible. Elm Street and Day of the Dead remakes definitely deserve to be on here. Fright Night I didn’t like but it in no way qualifies as one of the worst. Texas Chainsaw, not as good as the original but nowhere near bad.

How Jeepers Creepers, Cabin Fever, Cabin in the Woods and Sinister are on this list I will never be able to work out.

      20. Ryan June 11, 2013 at 1:53 pm

I’m really surprised to see Cabin in the Woods on here! Cabin Fever too, though I can understand that a bit more.

the Nightmare remake as #1 feels more reactionary than anything.

I’m surpised to see that fare like Red State (I enjoyed it, but it was totally mis-marketed as “horror”), the previously mentioned Haunting (remake), House on Haunted Hill (remake) or some of the z-grade cash grabs from the 80s like Slaughter High didn’t make it.

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 11, 2013 at 3:09 pm

Well said. Make sure you vote ( link at the end of the article )

      21. TheDude1980 June 11, 2013 at 3:07 pm

NOES Remake number 1? Now that is complete horse crap. I don’t see why people rag on that so much. I’m a huge fan of the NOES franchise and a big fan of Robert Englund however I really enjoy the remake. Some people just need to get off their high horse.

        • Herner Klenthur

Did you vote? Make sure you do buddy.

      22. Chris June 11, 2013 at 4:27 pm

Of the 20 movies on the list , many of these are on my instant replays…I get a little perplexed that movies such as fright night , sinister, and many of these titles are just suberb.amazing how finicky horror fans have become as it almost appears that people are more interested in blasting these shows .it makes me wonder why they arent intersted in romantic comedies…lol.I have just over 2500horror movies In my collection and trust me voters there are far crappier selections than some of the gems on this list

        • Tiago almeida June 11, 2013 at 4:48 pm

Man, worst is subjective. An internet vote is not an academic thesis. I mean, plan 9 can be good or bad. Depends on how you see it. Most this movies are not so bad but people have strong fellings about them. Tcm 3d is horrible? No. But if you are a fan of the original series, you will hate it. People vote by passion not reason. And even if you make a study about it is still subjective. Perfect example troll 2. Badness can be good. Unless you stablish some criteria, it is only a matter of opinion.

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 11, 2013 at 5:10 pm

          well said.

      23. Flay Otters June 11, 2013 at 4:28 pm

Don’t know how much support I’ll get (but will vote it in anyway) but there are few films horror or otherwise that I just could not stand more than the Night Of The Demons remake. I’ve tried now twice more to watch it since that initial viewing but just have the same frustrated, angst-y feeling when it ends.

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 11, 2013 at 4:31 pm

Flay I REALLY think you need to make it your mission to do your own 10 Worst this weekend. I respect our readers but I think this list is a bit off.

      24. Matt June 11, 2013 at 8:54 pm

Either the people who voted are trolling, or they haven’t seen very many horror movies. I know everyone has their own opinion, but damn…………

      25. Marigen Beltran June 11, 2013 at 9:16 pm

        The Basement, horrible anthology

      26. Lalada June 11, 2013 at 10:35 pm

“I don’t want to hijack this post to impose my own views and imply the movies on the list which aren’t the same as my own opinion are invalid, but…”

        Good list, terrible “commentary”.

      27. timesthree333 June 12, 2013 at 2:26 am

Amen to the guy/girl above who nominates Exorcist 2. That movie is really and truly terrible. In a just world Human Centipede should not be anywhere near this list. That was one of the more inventive movies to come along in recent years.

      28. Flay Otters June 12, 2013 at 9:02 pm

Tiago, well said, the parameter issue is a good one to bring up. I often think about 10 best, 20 best, 50 best albums/movies lists that come out at the end of the year. You see a lot of repeats on many lists but there are just as many screwy, out of left field ones too based soley (in my view) on the writer’s exposure to things, genres etc.

Herner, I will give it a go. I don’t really like driving the negative narrative all that much, but, there are some that I just flat cannot stand and wouldn’t want to dance around that. We’ll see how it goes.

        • Herner Klenthur
Herner Klenthur June 12, 2013 at 10:07 pm

well you can follow it up with your 10 favorite :)

        • Tiago June 12, 2013 at 10:21 pm

When it comes to horror is very hard to set those parameters. Is the Shining better than The Evil Dead? Is Psycho better than Halloween? Non fans would say the first, fans would say the second.
It’s very hard to defend any point academically…
But I think it is so much fan to share opinions and list, and defend them with passion.
You guys do it very well.

      29. Shawn June 13, 2013 at 9:04 pm

So “Weasels Rip My Flesh” didn’t make the list? You need to add a #0. It is, hands down, THE most atrocious “movie” ever made. None of these are even on the same planet, let alone the same ball park.

      30. p July 11, 2013 at 8:48 pm

Wow i’m really surprised that cabin fever, jeepers creepers and jason x made this list, the rest i agree with especially fright night remake but trust me there’s a lot more trash out there like
        - Hellraiser 4,6,7,8,9
        - Saw 4-5
        - Hostel 2-3
        - Scream 3-4
        - Exorcist
        - Evil Dead 2
        - Paranormal Activity 2-4
        - Prom Night [Remake] [2008]
        - Ring II
        - The Grudge 2-3
All these i feel are a lot more deserving

Why are these films on here:
        Jeppers creepers
        Texas chainsaw massercre (remake)
        Paranormal activity
        Chernobyl diaries
        Fright night ( remake)
Nightmare on elm street ( remake )
Plus, I really want to watch sinster.

Plus, children of the living dead should be on here.

I watched sinster. Why is it here? It was one of the most terrifying movies of the decade, and seriously children of the living dead should be number one on this list.

There are some terrible movies on this list, but it’s very obvious that most of the voters haven’t seen the really terrible ones.
I didn’t like the Freddy-Remake either, but is it the worst movie ever made? Come on!
Only if you haven’t seen Wrong Turn 5, The Last Exorcism – Sequel, Coffin Baby, Cannibal Diner….

@Mick, I kinda felt Wrong Turn 5 was deliberately trying to be as bad as possible, whilst almost succeeding in being enjoyable (to me). The rest though.. oh dear :)

As for the list, I can’t agree with most of them to be honest (except for House of the Dead). Perhaps the scope of the poll is just too wide resulting in relatively newer films only making the short list in the first instance.

Having a worst horror film list per decade may be more ideal.

Also I found Human Centipede 2 to be far far worse than the first one, it’s unbearable, not for the premise or gore factor though, just because it’s an absolutely awful film. I suspect lack of distribution has played a part with it not entering the list perhaps?
