MONSTERS Movie Review

MONSTERS Movie ReviewI have heard nothing but high praise for Gareth Edwards Monsters and considering he was recently given the task of remaking Godzilla that says a lot of how impressed even Hollywood was with this low budget indie horror film that is a throwback to better days in sci-fi horror. Luke Franklin our resident horror guru has already reviewed the film but I wanted to add my own two cents on what I consider one of the true gems of 2010.

Monsters continues the tradition of great sci-fi horror with a focus on a great script, great visuals and a talented cast of unknowns. Lately scifi has gotten bigger and more explosive and become very much a popcorn affair. Monsters reminds me that their are still very talented filmmakers we should be paying attention. Not since Toby Wilkins Splinter and MOON have I seen such talent for mixing horror with scifi and keeping it extremely high brow.

Moon takes place six years after NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America.  Soon after, new life forms began to appear there and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE.  Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain “the creatures”…

Our story begins when an American photojournalist, Andrew Kaulder on assignment in Mexico, is instructed by his boss to find and escort his daughter, Samantha back to the safety of the US. Their mission turns into a terrifying road trip when Kaulder and Samantha (played by real-life couple Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able) miss the last ferry and must journey overland through the Infected Zone in the care of various mercenaries and local guides, to reach the safety of the US border.

Starring Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able Monsters is not your typical sci-fi film with its emphasis primarily being on the human element and the lives they are living in the aftermath of the global alien event. With Special FX completed by Gareth Edwards on his own computer, MONSTERS is a visually stunning piece of story telling with great characters, interesting dialogues and a story of love, survival and the elements. Very little of the actual monsters are seen in this film and there is alot of setup for a potential prequel or sequel story to please the action junkies but if your interested in seeing a scifi film packed full of depth, great acting and a truly unique take on the alien invasion angle Monsters delivers in every sense of the word.
