Insidious Movie Review

Earlier today I posted a poll on  the Horror Movies FaceBook page asking you all how many of you intended to see Insidious this weekend. For the longest time I was the ONLY person who voted I was going to. As of writing this review only 4 of our 5,299 facebook fans have intentions of seeing the film and as one of those four who just returned from the theatre it is I suppose my duty to report on Insidious and give you the honest truth on this new promising horror film.

Insidious is brought to use by SAW creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell and is a new twist on the age old ghost story. Let’s start with the Synopsis from Alliance films; When proud parents take possession of an old house, an accident results in one of their sons falling into a coma. The tragedy doesn’t stop there when they are beset by vengeful spirits from another realm in this new chiller by the director and writer of Saw and by the producers of Paranormal Activity. The film stars Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey and Patrick Wilson.

Insidious is probably best compared as Paranormal Activity meets Case 39 with a side order of Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell. It tries very hard to pay homage to classic ghost stories like Poltergiest and Amityville Horror while still offering something fresh and unique.

The first half of Insidious is quite creepy all be it not horribly different from any other ghost story movie from the last 30 years. Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson both deliver powerful performances and with a great supporting cast and strong ambience the film works for the most part as we slowly gather steam and head towards a final showdown with an evil force. Unfortunately unlike with SAW where I had nothing but good things to say with Insidious I am going to have to throw down the gloves.

Insidious is brought to us by the power house creators of SAW and the producers of Paranormal Activity two very memorable films for the horror genre. Unfortunately Insidious is an ‘ok film’ that does very little to advance the genre and unfortunately falls into the same failures that Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell did relying on silly ‘bump in the dark’ tactics to freak you out and a script that is borderline original but also far too predictable. It starts out strong building up to what we can assume to be a climatic finale but unfortunately it quickly degenerates into another run of the mill ghost story.

Insidious is a straight up ghost story with some very creepy moments but unfortunately it is not a movie that will stay with you after you leave the theatre like SAW did or generate the kind of viral interest that Paranormal Activity did. Insidious will entertain you and creep you out at times but it will not resonate with you like SAW did which is what I was hoping to see from James Wan’s latest outing at the box office.

The creators and studio behind Insidious might have intentions of kick starting a brand new billion dollar horror franchise but from my perspective the first was enough and as much as Insidious was at times entertaining it by no means has the legs to inspire a sequel much less a franchise.

Summed up the film has an interesting look and feel that pays homage to classic ghost stories, an interesting but by no means captivating story, a strong cast of performers and unfortunately one of the most cliché and predictable endings possible. Worth seeing? Perhaps. To me it comes off as the kind of horror film that teenage audiences will be truly terrified by and it certainly offers a higher creep value then Sam Raimis Drag Me To Hell but it also has much lower production values. Put frankly if you like me will have to pay $22.50 for a coke, popcorn and a movie ticket I would say wait for it on DVD.

So to recap for those who seem to think I hate this movie, what I liked

  • A very well polished film for its extremely small budget of under $1million
  • Nice homage to classic horror films of yester years
  • A well put together cast featuring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne
  • Some creepy moments and an interesting angle on the haunting aspect.

What I did not like

  • Alot of the scares in the movie were cheap jump out at you moments similar to Boogeyman
  • The script started out strong but ended with an extremely predictable ending
  • I was truly just hoping for more, fair or unfair from James Wan. I am a huge admirer of SAW and Death Sentence and was hoping to see something that would really resonate with me.

Overall Insidious is a good movie and one that you will very likely enjoy depending on your expectations. 7 out of 10 stars

THANK YOU!!! I have been trolling for an opinion I trust forever. :) Looks like I can save my dough. xoxo

like i said to you on facebook i think you might have some for this one Maven. I think it might be right up your alley even if we usually share the same tastes :)

  • Suspiria_89

Great review. I was waiting for some reviews to come in before I went and saw it. Sounds like I should probably just wait for the DVD.

    • http://twitter.com/HorrorMovies HorrorMovies

Suspiria never let a review stop you from seeing a film you feel an affinity towards. :)

    “Its not worth $22.50″

Your inclusion of popcorn and soda costs in a movie review designed to discourage ticket sales is beyond stupid and nastily unfair.

    • Meh

how so? the statement is that for a night out it cost $22.50 and that was not a good expenditure. It doesnt say the movie cost $22.50 and it is no more blaming the popcorn for the movie then it is blaming the woman who spilled half my popcorn for ruining my experience.

I respect that you took the time to comment but i think your misreading something I said. insidious is a good movie but not a great movie in my humble opinion and I encourage all readers to agree or disagree and share their views in a civil fashion.

While I do completely disagree with you about your opinion on this movie I do respect your opinion. I to believe that it did rely of too much stupid scares aimed at younger audiences but then again most hardcore horror fans like us are very rarely scared at all anymore with today’s horror.

The one thing I will take issue with you on is that it has no legs for a franchise. Due to the very low budget($800,000) and the low amount on advertising(probably no more than 7 million) this thing will easily hit profit in its first weekend(which is already on pace for 12 million this weekend).

    • Meh

Excellent points Dude on the low budget and the low promotional efforts.

This was a highly repetitive review this was. You told us multiple times who brought us this movie, and repeated the same opinions more than once with only a slight change in wording. It seemed like you intentionally inflated this review for the purpose of making it seem more detailed… I also disagree with adding in the price of food/drink to the initial ticket price. It isn’t the fault of the creators that you spent an additional $15 on food and drink…

    • Meh

Jake I respect that you dont appreciate my review. As I pointed out I enjoyed insidious but from my humble point of view I was expecting more from some such a talented duo.

As thedude rightly points out in a comment above yours considering the low budget which I did not consider this film has the potential to become a franchise for Alliance films.

I dont claim to be a ‘formal critic’ nor am I correct, my views are just that.. my views and yours are always most welcome here.

I took my teenage son (15) to see this,It was a packed threatre, the audience was screaming (men and women) at various scenes, it was very intense, my son who is normally not afraid of things, was scared during the movie and actually wants me to stay up with him all night. It is a scary movie and while some of us know it will have a predictable storyline, it was still worth the money to go see it.It kept you interested and alert.

    • http://twitter.com/HorrorMovies HorrorMovies

good to hear that you and your family liked it Susan

    • Scooner

Funny, because I took my 15 year old son to it as well — we both enjoyed it and thought it was very scary. A man sitting in our row literally involuntarily threw his popcorn all over himself and the people nearby during one of the many scary scenes. My son, a tough kid, had to sleep with our dog last night.

  • World

This was definately a poor review. This movie was seriously AWESOME. People were terrified. The story is imaginative, original. We need more horror movies like this. Completely ignore this review and check this movie out…. Again this reviewer factoring in popcorn and soda costs is ridiculous. Pathetic even. Don’t quit your day job.

I agree with you on the point of going to see it. Never let one persons personal opinion sway you from a movie.

THIS MOVIE WAS GREAT!!!!!!!! FIRST HORROR MOVIE I HAVE SEEN IN A LONG TIME THAT ACTUALLY HAD ME A LITTLE AFRAID!!!!! GO SEE! GO SEE! GO SEE!

  • Kendallkeeling

I saw this yesterday and I really liked it. It actually made me scream and that’s pretty tough considering how jaded I am. Yes it has some goofy moments and yes it was a lot like Poltergeist, but I thought it was at least an 8. I was never a huge fan of SAW, so that being said, I didn’t have any preconceived notions.

I saw this film last night, and I honestly didnt sleep much :P My boyfriend and I have been looking forward to seeing it, since the trailer came out. The movie was done amazingly well, I was quite frightened throughout. Based on the review I have to agree with many of the comments here, that the SAW franchise and the Paranormal Activity movies can’t really compare to this imaginative story, it reminded me of the Haunting in Conneticut meets Amityville Horror and Drag Me to Hell. SAW and Paranormal Activity aren’t scary at all the effects are good but that is pretty much it, the fact that this movie [insidious] is being shown as lackluster to these movies in your review, makes me question your opinion. But, it is that your own opinion. I also agree that this movie didnt have a lot of promotion I saw the trailer while flipping through Yahoo Movies and was immediately drawn to it and couldnt wait to see it. Trust me, watch this movie it is amazingly scary, imaginative, creative and downright creepy. You’ll have a great time!

I do agree that there was an excess of startling moments in this movie – a few seems almost mandatory for a ghost movie – this movie had so many that I was tense through the whole thing waiting for things to jump out. But I do find a special place in my heart for movies that make people scream in the movie theater. I actually am not sure I ever have screamed in a movie theater before, and this movie did manage to get a scream out of me. And one lady dumped her giant soda all over herself. Startling moments aside, I think it is worth seeing just for the creepy surreal imagery that’s in the second half of the film. And how many movies DON’T have predictable endings? I’m on a diet so I skipped the movie theater food, and I would say this movie was well worth my $10.

It’s albeit, not all be it. I’m not normally a grammar Nazi, but I’ve seen this mistake in almost all of your reviews.

That said, you’re not too far off the mark when it comes to Insidious. Personally, I loved the first two acts. My guy friend and I actually yelled out loud a couple times. But the third act was terrible and ruined it for me.
