On Saturday, June 25th, 2011 we held our 6th HorrorMovies.ca Movie Night and it was 1970’s Haunted Houses, The Legend of Hell House (1973) and The Sentinel (1977) Those who attended are;
This selection of movies came from a selection of LoudLon’s. He wanted to do a more atmospheric set of films, which these definitely were. “Hell House” comes from the Richard Matheson novel; he also wrote the screenplay for this film. Various details from the movie were left out of the movie, which did not detract from the movie as the film stands on its own well. Those who have read the book will notice several details either changed or omitted.
The film is centered on a house (Britain in the movie, Maine in the book) that is supposedly very haunted. A group consisting of a mental medium, a physical medium, a skeptic, and the skeptic’s wife journey to the house to try to determine if there is an afterlife; this trip is paid for by a terminally ill, but very wealthy, patron. Suffice to say, there is a considerable amount of evidence presented, but the cause is in question. For once, I matched LoudLon with knowledge for a film.
After a humorous intermission (the group was trying to diagnose a problem on one members computers), we started up our second film, “The Sentinel.” This film has a certain feel/connection to ‘The Beyond,’ in that an apartment building is a portal to hell. A new tenant meets the current residents, who are all quite odd. Various spooky things begin to happen, but there is a question if they are real or if she is having a mental breakdown. ‘Sentinel’ includes a great cast of many prolific actors and actresses in their younger years.
As we normally do, the group went on to watch some more movies in the ‘Afterparty.’ ‘Day of the Dead’ was the next film that was agreed on. At this point some of the attendees had dropped out since it was about midnight US Eastern time, but the rest of the group enjoyed riffing on the stereotyped characters.
For the final film, we had a split bill. LoudLon and I were watching ‘The Blob’ remake while FloridaPossum was watching ‘Quarantine 2.’ It was an interesting experience integrating two movies into one discussion, but it went fairly well. Possum had seen the ‘Blob’ before, so she knew what we were talking about, and she described what was happening in ‘Q2,’ which Lon and I have not seen.
It was not as an ‘exciting’ night since the films were more focused on atmosphere, but an enjoyable night nonetheless.
I would like to thank HM and all of the participants for a great chat. Our next movie night will be a ‘Linda Blair’ night featuring ‘The Exorcist’ and ‘Hell Night.’
