You Voted: 15 Best Horror Films of 2011 So Far

If there is one thing we try really hard to do its include all of you in the site and the community as much as possible. Over the last week I have been asking our Horror Facebook Community which is nearly 14,000 strong what your favorite horror movies of 2011 are.

After giving everyone ample time to vote I took 2 hours and put everyones votes into a spreadsheet and have made a Top Horror Films of 2011 list, with the caveat of course that the year is very much not over and some really great horror films are still getting ready to hit theatres and DVD. So if your wondering what you should be watching use this list as a starting point. The list below includes DVD releases where the film had a small theatrical run. It is also worth noting that the first film had over 40% of the votes and the next three easily had 8% of the vote each.

#15 ) Hobo With a Shotgun:

Grindhouse is the newest flavor of the week and Hobo With a Shotgun has all the ingredients in spades. A homeless vigilante blows away crooked cops, pedophile Santas, and other scumbags with his trusty pump-action shotgun.

#14 ) Fright Night 3D:

In the remake of the 80’s vampire classic a teenager suspects that his new neighbor is a vampire. This film stars Colin Farrell and has gotten surprisingly quite good feedback from horror fans making it no surprise you all voted it #14.

#13 ) The Rite:

An American seminary student travels to Italy to take an exorcism course. This supernatural tale which stars the incredibly talented Anthony Hopkins is definitely no exorcist but its still a very good direct to DVD title. It also is based on a true story which makes it even creepier.

#12 ) Yellow Brick Road:

I am surprised this one made the list but clearly some of you really liked it. Yellow Brick Road is the tale of a small town thats population completely dissapeared in the 40′s. The movie revolves around a group of investigators who go to the town to try and unravel what happened to the citizens of Friar.

#11 ) Tucker & Dale vs Evil:

If you liked Shaun of  the Dead its a safe bet you will want to checkout Tucker & Dale vs Evil. Tucker & Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are attacked by a group of preppy college kids.

#10 ) Attack the Block:

Attack the Block is about a teen gang in South London who defend their block from an alien invasion. This is easily one of my favorite movies of 2011 and one of the best monster movies I have seen since Toby Wilkins SPLINTER

#9 ) I Spit on your Grave:

A remake of the 70’s horror classic it tells the story of a writer who is brutalized during her cabin retreat and seeks revenge on her attackers, who left her for dead. Not as brutal as the originaln film but its still very violent and has some scenes that are very hard to watch as the female lead goes on a violent path of revenge.

#8 ) Red State: Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda. This is Kevin Smith’s latest film and also his second last film before he retires. It has gotten mixed reviews and it seems you will either love it or hate it.

#7 ) Quarantine 2:

A plane is taken over by a mysterious virus. When the plane lands it is placed under quarantine. Now a group of survivors must band together to survive the quarantine. Quarantine 2 is a sequel to Quarantine which is a remake of REC. REC 2 is already out on DVD and has absolutely nothing to do with Quarantine 2.

#6 ) Scream 4:

Ten years have passed, and Sidney Prescott, who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited by the Ghostface Killer. I really enjoyed Scream 4 for the Nostalgia factor and although its not as good as the first its definitely better then Scream 3.

#5 ) Troll Hunter:

A group of students investigate a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.

#4 ) Rec 2:

The action continues from [Rec], with the medical officer and a SWAT team outfitted with video cameras are sent into the sealed off apartment to control the situation. REC is a fantastic foreign zombie film that everyone needs to see and clearly you fans are just as passionate about the sequel.

#3 ) I Saw the Devil:

When his pregnant fiancee becomes the latest victim of a serial killer, a secret agent blurs the line between good and evil in his pursuit of revenge. I Saw The Devil is a fantastic horror film that turns the hero into the villain and the villain into prey with its incredible story, extreme violence and fantastic twists. A very good foreign horror/thriller.

#2) Stakeland:

Martin was a normal teenage boy before the country collapsed in an empty pit of economic and political disaster. A vampire epidemic has swept across what is left of the nation’s abandoned towns and cities, and it’s up to Mister, a death dealing, rogue vampire hunter, to get Martin safely north to Canada, the continent’s New Eden. For me Stakeland is the Walking Dead of Vampire Movies. Admittedly a very slow and dry movie but a movie I love immensely and clearly so do alot of you.

#1 ) Insidious:

A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further. Insidious took the #1 spot on the list with over 40% of the vote making it your choice for the Best Horror Film of 2011 so far and frankly a pretty fine choice at that.

So there you have it the 15 best horror movies of 2011 based on the average score of our Facebook community. Obviously I do not agree with this list entirely but there are some fine choices on this list. I would strongly recommend Attack the Block , Insidious, I Saw The Devil and Stakeland as must see horror films of 2011.
