10 Must See Horror Films on Netflix

When it comes to finding a decent selection, Netflix has you covered. With so many to choose from, how do you know what to watch?

I recommend filling the queue with these awesome horror flicks. This is a new on going series where myself and the rest of the team here will share with you 10 horror movies worth checking out on Netflix.

This feature will be a two parter with one focusing on the American Netflix for our American readers and a second one focusing on Netflix Canada for our Canadian readers.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

This movie is FUN because it takes all the horror movie rules, turns them upside down, and shakes ‘em up! Not since the Evil Dead movies has going to the woods to an old run down cabin been so much fun.

Tucker & Dale [Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine] are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are attacked by a group of preppy college kids.

The good guys are the bad guys, at times the villains become the heroes and throughout its a blood bath of laughs.

Grave Encounters

Brand spanking new on Netflix – the crew of a ghost hunters show spends the night in a haunted mental hospital and crazy stuff happens! Following in the footsteps of the found footage category, this film is creepy, well paced, and probably one of the most recommended of the genre in 2011.

Synopsis: For their ghost hunting reality show, a production crew locks themselves inside an abandoned mental hospital that’s supposedly haunted – and it might prove to be all too true.

Night of the Living Dead

It’s the original. A true classic. Feels like it’s over a hundred years old, but it really only has been like 50 years. Going back to the original Romero zombie recipe – A group of people deal with their stereotypical problems while hiding from bloodthirsty zombies.

George Romero is a legend and true master of horror and everyone should see his original master piece at least one time in their life…. or in my case over 30 times.

C.H.U.D.

One of my favorites from the cult classics from the 80’s crowd – a bizarre series of murders in New York City seems to point toward the existence of a race of mutant homeless cannibals living under the streets.

This is a classic monster movie with great practical FX. If you are sick of CGI and over the top Hollywood monsters then CHUD is a classic film that will take you back to the roots of a great monster movie.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night

This is a fun movie about the adventures of a supernatural private eye, Dylan Dog [Brandon Routh], and his zombie sidekick, Marcus [Sam Huntington], fighting a vampire coven led by Vargas [Taye Diggs] in the Louisiana bayou. It’s sexy, funny, and light – ready to go for a quick viewing.

Dead of Night wont win any awards but it is still well worth checking out. It has some great characters, reasonable acting and despite some flaws is an overall fun film.

Masters of Horror: The Series

The greatest horror writers and directors including: Joe Dante, John Landis, John Carpenter, and Dario Argento, produce their own one-hour tales about serial killers, the supernatural, and everything else to be perceived as creepy, and pack it into a 13 part series, all for your entertainment.

I highly recommend starting with either Landis’ “Family”, or Argento’s “Jenifer”. Masters of Horror is a great 13 part series and one that makes your Netflix account worth every penny.

Troll 2

This movie has made it to the top of almost every ‘worst movies ever made’ list. Which means we should all watch it, right? A family vacationing in a small town of NILBOG [‘Goblin’ spelled backwards… har, har, har…] discovers the entire town is inhabited by goblins in disguise as humans, who plan to eat them.

OH MY GOOOOOOODDDDDD.

Evil Dead

I go into shock when a horror fan tells me they haven’t seen this. No excuse now, it’s streamable! Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods for some R&R, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.

Put candidly if you have not seen Evil Dead then you sir/mam are not a true blue horror fan. Bruce Campbell is a cult icon and Sam Raimi is a legendary figure because of this film!

Creepshow

Before we had the modern classic Trick R Treat which is one of the best anthologies ever made we had Creepshow. It spawned some dubious sequels but the original is still a classic.

Such a classic! Inspired by the E.C. comics of the 1950s, George Romero and Stephen King bring five tales of terror to the screen. There are so many ‘Easter Eggs’ to be on the lookout when watching this – I counted like six? See how many you can find before Googling them.

Behind the Mask

I love this movie so much, and I feel like it’s slipped through the cracks of one too many ‘top movies to see’ lists. Here’s story – the next great serial killer, Leslie Vernon, gives a documentary film crew access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the town of Glen Echo.

Leslie deconstructs the conventions and archetypes of the horror genre for the crew, all the while preparing them for one hell of a twist. One of the best indie horror films of the last 20 years it is a must see for fans of the genre!
