DethBanger’s Best Horror Films of 2011 Part 2

Written by: Deth_Banger

This comes thanks in part to RGriffin for posting some horror films he forgot where awesome. The thing with doing a top anything is that you will always forget something that you have watched or something came out in the last minute.

Anyway, I have heard many people say that 2011 was a rubbish or disappointing year for horror, for me, I thought it was excellent, in fact it was that good that I had to do a part 2 to my initial list. This is due to the fact that the indie scene and the foreign market are producing some masterful and truly wonderful pieces of work, basically putting the likes oh Hollywood to shame.

Enough of my ramblings, I bring to you my part 2 of the best horror films I have seen in 2011.

Dead Hooker in a Trunk

I’ve been hearing good things about Jen & Sylvia Soska’s indie offering Dead Hooker in a Trunk for a while, but never got the chance to see it. Thankfully an opportunity came and I was blown away, it is a witty tale which is extremely violent, but most of all, it is freaking fun! If you haven’t seen this one yet, what are you waiting for? Check this one out, this is surely a cult classic in the making.

The Troll Hunter

As a fan of the POV style filmmaking, this was instantly up my alley, also it was different. It wasn’t about ghosts or something supernatural. This is about the folktale of Trolls in Norway. While the story was different and truly captured my attention, it was the wonderful effects on display that truly kept me mesmerized. I’m usually the first to hate on anything that uses CGI, but they made it work so well. It was also believable, something Hollywood should learn a lesson or two from.

Thankfully I managed to check this one out, but it was two late for my initial list, but now it is here and it is a real treat.  Sadly, as I’m sure you are all aware, this is getting the remake treatment, still, at least we have the original to behold for years to come.

Scalene

Zack Parker’s perceptual thriller is an excellent and truly moving story which is beautifully shot and the acting in most parts is exceptional. While it isn’t exactly horror, it is more of a dark thriller, but it plays it’s heart close to the genre. The film is told from three points of view, which gives you a different perspective on the events which unfortunately unfold.

This is quite a slow burn, but for those who are willing to wait and become entwined with the story will be paid off tenfold. Margo Martindale who plays the vengeful mother Janice Trimble is outstanding and truly owned the film. Give this one a try and you may be surprised.

Chillerama

What can I say? This was hilarious. I love anthology films as it is, but this was a real treat with my favorite segment being Adam Green’s The Diary of Anne Frankenstein. Although, all the stories were pretty awesome in their own way. This is a great popcorn flick and it should become a staple of everyone’s Halloween marathon of films for years to come. Is it silly? Yes. Is it disgusting? Absolutely. But that’s what makes it such a fun film and they managed to intertwine them all.

It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is worth a watch and is a true keeper for me.

Tucker & Dale vs Evil

I may get some hate for this, but I never really enjoyed Shaun of the Dead, it just never hit my funny bone. However, Eli Craig’s Tucker & Dale vs Evil had me literally laughing out loud. It was so brilliantly done and ever since I witnessed this one this past Christmas, I’ve been on everyone’s case to check it out. I find it hard to laugh some times, but a horror films of all things made me do just that.

Add this one to your list, stat. This almost makes me want t be a hillbilly.

And that draws to the conclusion of my top horror films of 2011, if you haven’t witnessed my part 1, head on over HERE. With 2011 being such a good year for horror films for me, I cannot wait to witness some of the gems coming out this year. 2012 is already shaping up to be one of the best years for horror films.
