It appears as if the Resident Evil series certainly shows no signs of slowing down, as the latest fifth installment in the series, Resident Evil: Retribution, took the number one spot this weekend at the box-office according to Deadline.
The film opened with $8.8M on Friday and has currently took $21.1M for the weekend. In retrospect its not as much as the previous outing, but this is where the International figures come into play, the film took $50M oversees, bringing the total up to $71.1M.
Thanks to the oversees figures, this one is said to have beat the last film by 28%, which in turn led a Sony Executive state, “This could be the biggest one yet.”
So if the trend oversees continues, then this will pretty much cement this installment as the highest grossing film in the franchise, and it could bring the whole franchise up to $1B in worldwide box-office sales.
With this you probably know what’s coming, I’m pretty certain that this isn’t the last we have seen of Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil flicks, so expect even more in the near future.
But my question is, does this recent offering warrant another film? Should the series continue? Let us know your opinions.
