Platinum Dunes has just set the release date for their political slasher The Purge on May 31st, 2013. Directed by James DeMonaco starring Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Max Burkholder, Adelaide Kane, Edwin Hodge, Tony Oller and Rhys Wakefield. Jason Blum, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing.
The sci-fi thriller takes place in a future where a new regime, called “New Founding Fathers of America”, seek to control an epidemic of violence and crime with an experiment called “The Cure”. The Cure is a completely hypocritical “event” where, three times a year, for 12 hours, murder is completely legal. The film is said to play like a home invasion film with a heavy political theme. It’s planned to be the first film in a post-apocalyptic franchise.
