The Frozen DVD Review

Mike (Mitchell) and Emma (Morgan) take an ill-advised winter camping trip and get stranded in the woods after a snowmobile accident. When Mike disappears Emma is left on her own not only to battle the elements but also to elude a mysterious man (played by Noah Segan) who has been tracking her through the forest.

I always hate to bag on a movie but I have to admit that this one was a tough one to get through. It has excellent production values and a concept that is quite unique but it is very poorly executed for my tastes. Admittedly I have never been a fan of art films and for whatever reason this movie strikes me as a movie for the upper crust film goer which I am not.

I love an intelligent thriller I loved Adam Greens SPIRAL, I thought FROZEN was nothing short of genius and the apocalyptic nightmare PONTYPOOL blew me away. All are slow-paced and more thriller then horror but unfortunately I can not add The Frozen to the list.

The Frozen relies on many transitions and plot twists that are coming out of left field and to many of them result in a fade to black interlaced with dream sequences which mire the lines between reality and fiction.

For the last half of the movie I was so confused I figured I was either having a psychotic episode because I had no idea what the hell was going on and my brain was literally starting to hurt trying to follow the story and figure out what was going on in a movie with only 3 characters.

With all that negativity I must say The Frozen is long, dry and very confusing but the director does effectively pull it all together in the end to put some finality to an otherwise confusing movie. It’s a really unique concept that could have been better executed and I think if it finds the proper audience it will find fans.

It is a cross between Dante Tomasselli’s film work ( only without the insane gore ) and Stephen Kings The Shining with a whole lot of art film flavoring.

This film would be good for fans of supernatural thrillers who don’t mind a slow burn and can appreciate a somewhat murky story with a rewarding finish. Overall I think most horror fans will be dissapointed in this movie I give it a 2.5 out of 5 and feel I was just clearly not the demographic for it.
