Joe Dante is a legendary horror icon and has brought to life some of the best horror movies from the 80’s and 90s. He is also the director of two of my favourite horror movies of all time GREMLINS and The Burbs.
If you have not ever seen The Burbs which stars Tom Hanks as a nosy neighbour who takes on his suspected serial killer neighbours you must. Its hilarious, creepy and absolutely genius.
The Hole is a 3D movie but I did not see it in 3D since I watched it on Netflix on Demand. I am however somewhat regretting that I did not see it in 3D since that is my new fascination. Since I purchased a 3D Television I am partaking in as many 3D movies as possible to see which are crap and which like LionsGate’s DREDD and Disney’s Ice Age Continental Drift are worth watching.
Back the the point of my article Joe Dante’s The Hole is the story of two brothers who find a hole in their new home and discover that it is actually a gateway to their deepest fears and it manifests evil which comes out of the hole and wreaks havoc on them and their attractive neighbor.
Overall The Hole is exactly what you might expect from Joe Dante a well polished film that although its by no means scary is definitely a fun affair. Although The Hole is not Joe Dantes best film it is a nostalgic throw back to the 80’s and 90’s when horror movies were more family oriented and focused on younger lead characters and connected with teens and adults alike. This is no Burbs but it is definitely a fun and entertaining movie for a younger group of horror fans.
Today most horror movies as I often lament are focused heavily on young starlets with pearly white teeth and studs with six packs and not so much on building a dynamic story or a memorable movie. The Hole as I mentioned has a strong and talented cast that yes they may be easy on the eyes it is secondary to telling a unique and fun story. The hole may miss the mark of Mr Dante’s earlier films but not by much.
The Hole is also a pretty good choice of a film to introduce people to the horror genre When I was about 10 my parents introduced me to the horror genre with CRITTERS which scared the crap out of me. This movie wont terrify the younger generation but is a fun soft horror movie for the younger set and adults to enjoy.
The Hole gets a 3.5 out of 5 and as far as I am concerned is a great movie to spend 90 minutes watching while enjoying The Holidays.
