Paul Verhoeven to Direct The Legend of Conan?

Chris Savage

How awesome would this be? Okay, you may not like Paul Verhoeven, but I’ve been a fan of his work since I can remember, so to have him back with Arnold Schwarzenegger and both of them working on a new Conan film is basically off the hook!

So, will Verhoeven direct The Legend of Conan? Who knows at this point, but recently an interview popped up over at Arnold Fans via Dread Central in which he ushered in his interest to do so.

If they asked me, I’d certainly love to – let’s put it that way,” says Verhoeven of the possible gig.“But I don’t know what the script is. I don’t know what Arnold wants. I’m a big fan in fact of Conan. That’s a great movie, and I found that the composer, Basil Poledouris, basically inspired many of my movies [the soundtracks] like Flesh and Blood, RoboCop, Starship Troopers, and Total Recall. The score of Conan is great. The style of editing that Milius used was very beautiful, and Arnold does a great job. He was really the perfect choice.”

So what about Schwarzenegger, where does he stand? Here is what he had to say regarding his return to Conan;

Well, age doesn’t mean anything to me because I work out every day,” says Schwarzenegger of the physicality of the film at his age. “I work out twice a day, as a matter of fact. At night I work out with weights, and in the morning I do cardiovascular training. So for me, to get on the set and to swing the sword around again and to ride the horses and all those things doesn’t mean anything [and does not scare me] because I feel like I did thirty years ago. So as long as I stay in shape, that’s the key thing, and to keep your body young. Even though you do feel the pain when you wipe out and when you do your fight scenes and you get more sore and the body doesn’t come back as quickly and all this . . . but just grind through it, you know? That’s what it’s all about!”

How about that? Still nothing is confirmed, but would you be on-board for a Verhoeven directed Conan flick? Sound off below.

        Robocop, Total Recall, and Starship troopers were blissfully brutal, but they were Sci-Fi. Flesh and Blood was Fantasy, but disappointing in the brutality department. The original Conan was brilliantly brutal, but Arnold is old. His current return to the big screen is flopping at the box office. This pair could potentially resurrect a great character and a couple of great careers, but probably not.

        I would love to see it come to light. The story seems simply to me. He plays an aging ruler who is being challenged by a new up and comer. It could show all of the major passed events from the last movie until now, which would bridge the gap. Then, continue on with the current storyline.
