Another Reboot Attempt for Snake Plissken

Jason McDonald

Remember a few years ago when New Line bought the rights to remake Escape from New York and then nothing happened? Those were exciting times.  Well if you missed out on those glorious days, you’re about to get another shot.

Joel Silver and Studio Canal are partnering up to attempt to reboot the Snake Plissken franchise.  You might be wondering why I keep saying “Snake Plissken reboot” and not “remake of Escape from New York.”  Well, according to the article in Deadline, they’re not just interested in a remake, but they want to reboot the character for a whole new franchise.  In the article they equate it to what they did with Rise of the Planet of the Apes in that it would be an origin story for the Snake character made famous by Kurt Russell.  From there they want to take the series off into a new trilogy of films.  The search for a writer is underway.

In the original 1981 film Kurt Russell played Snake Plissken, a tough-as-nails ex-convict who is given the task of breaking into New York (which has been turned into a huge maximum security prison) to save the President of the United States.

What do you think? Who should be the new Snake?  And do you want to see how Snake came to be?  Maybe we’ll see him lose the eye in the new movie.
