Deadline has learned that Cheap Thrills has been purchased by Drafthouse Films who will handle the distribution of the film in theaters, DVD and VOD. This purchase marks one of the first big announcements to come out of SXSW and will hopefully be the first of many more to come. The fact that the first film to be purchased is a horror movie is kind of awesome, way to go horror!
Apparently the critical reception and audience reaction was so positive after the films screening on Friday, that a good ol’ fashion bidding war broke out. Among the competitors were Lionsgate, Magnolia and Anchor Bay. Drafthouse won the battle with a bid in the six figure range.
At this point no release date has been confirmed, but we’ll let you know when we hear something.
Cheap Thrills tells the story of a new father facing eviction whose life is turned upside down when he meets a wealthy couple who offer a path to a better life…but at a price. The film is directed by E.L. Katz and stars Pat Healy, Ethan Embry, David Koechner, and Sara Paxton
