George Romero To Direct Night of the Living Dead Remake

George Romero To Direct Night of the Living Dead RemakeGeorge Romero has been a staple of the zombie genre from pretty much day one and although he has had some less then stellar goes as of late with Diary of the Dead and Land of the Dead there is no denying that he is the master of the walking dead.

Today comes some pretty big news that George Romero will go back to his roots with a remake of Night of the Living Dead.

The original Night of the Living Dead film was mired in controversy when he lost the copyright and the film has been remade, rehashed and absolutely destroyed by various filmmakers over the years.

The only saving grace was in 1990 it was remade with Romero producing and Tom Savini directing and that was a truly awesome film.

George Romero clearly looking to take one last stab at the genre series that made him famous today announced on his official blog that he will be stepping behind the camera to direct a modern telling of the classic 60′s terror fest Night of The Living Dead for UNIVERSAL.

The script for the remake is set to bring Night of the Living Dead to a more modern era involving a fresh new cast but still holding true to the principals of the original. Hopefully he can do for Night of the Living Dead what Fede Alvarez has done for Evil Dead. Frankly who better to do it then the original creator himself.

With some luck he will bring back his power player Tom Savini and tap Greg Nicotero to not only help produce but work on the visual effects. If there is one thing we can count on Romero to do its produce a movie with no cgi, with an intricate message that is gory, terrifying and true to what all zombie movies should be.

Their is no official website for the project but you can checkout the first pre-production photo below;
