Poltergeist Remake Shooting This Summer!

Jason McDonald 12 Comments Movie Page: Poltergeist (2014)

Looks like MGM is trying to keep the ball rolling on this  Poltergeist remake.  Yesterday we learned that they Gil Kenan had been picked up to direct the movie, making him the third director to be attached to the project.

Today Variety is reporting that the often delayed horror remake is set to start production in late-summer.  Does that mean that this troubled project is finally going to move forward?  Not necessarily!  Don’t get your hopes up too soon, plenty of films fall apart during early production.  Only when the cameras are finally rolling will I breathe a sigh of relief for this project.

Although, I might be in the minority when it comes to seeing this horror remake hit the big screen.  How do you guys feel about it? Let us know in the comments.

This is one of those classic movies that should not be touched! I just hope they do it justice …

There’s so much potential to make it awesome, but I fear they’ll screw it up …

another unneeded remake … the original was perfect.

        ~Sigh~
I agree. This is one of those classic movies that fall under the same category as Jaws; one that shouldn’t be tainted by a remake…Considering the advances in CGI and practical effects, i can see why its looking to get updated. But with this sudden slew of ‘paranormal-esk’ films that have flooded cinemas, do we really need another one so soon? The way i see it is we need a Poltergeist remake right now as much as we needed another Scream sequel after Scary Movie’s release…
Since this post won’t deter movie studios and filmakers from mooching off a successful horror franchise, i must remain optimistic. I’m hoping they keep close to the original storyline and screen play, but incorporate a much grittier atmosphere; much like the Evil Dead remake. Poltergeist isn’t known for its ‘gore’ and it doesn’t have to be. Make it realistically bloody, but not over-the-top, and use practical effects instead of CGI as much as possibly to preserve the feel of realism. Avoid the same problems that plague most horror remakes by focusing on the suspense and the ‘scare’ instead of the ‘gore’. Today, scary movies are all about the ‘wow factor’ and ‘shock imagery’ and rarely leave much of anything to the imagination anymore.
In conclusion, if the filmakers just stay true to the story, stick by oldschool scare tactics, and arn’t solely focused on topping the original then a Poltergeist remake stands a chance. And as long as it’s not released in 3D, expect to see me the front row, come the premier!

They will ruin it because these days they will add so much sex in to it plus bet the parents in the remake will be 20 something… Film will be so spoilt..

I hope that this is going to the best movie ever. I dont liked the old series… bored and low cgi technology. If this movie is bad then I would be disappointment. Go for it.. Making it a best movie ever! :D

Well for coming out in ’82 you cannot really expect Avatar-esq CGI now can you?

Plus.. practical effects mean a lot more than computer. Just saying. Don’t diss an older movie because of dated CGI.

Poltergeist is a classic and was a great film. No need for a remake.

Filming is underway here in Toronto. They picked a creepy old historical home close to me and I just got notice that their equipment trucks will be parked on my street. The synopsis makes it sound like its not a straight remake and the story will be slightly altered (no Indian burial ground vs greedy developer?)

They chose a good hood to shoot in. Long rumoured as one of the most haunted in the city. Heard some scary ish from neighbours….

some of the details from the notice I got in the mail (as per request):
Willow tree productions is filming interior scenes at 469 Broadview Avenue. Directed by Gil Kenan and produced by MGM. (side note this notice is only for a day of shooting but there have been film trucks parked across the street from 469 off n on this summer).

It’s described as a “re-telling” of the 1982 original story of a young family visited by ghosts in their home. The broadview location represents a house being “cleaned” by a TV parapsychologist.

An interesting note about the location is that it is considered the oldest still lived-in residence in Toronto. Went by last night and it looks like if it’s not haunted then it must be inhabited by weirdo reclusive types who harbour deep, dark secrets from the past :)

They are currently filming in our neighbourhood in Hamilton, Ontario. They have been here since the end of August setting up the neighbourhood.
