American Mary continues to inch ever so closer to it’s US release date of May 31st, however there’s a new trailer to tide us over while we wait.
The film stars Katharine Isabelle, Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren, Paula Lindberg, Clay St. Thomas, John Emmet Tracy, and Twan Holliday and is directed by the Soska Sisters.
This metaphor for the Soskas’ own journey through the independent film industry follows medical student Mary Mason as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the twilight world of body modification and underground surgeries where obsessed flesh artists will pay anything and go through any pain to get their unusual procedures done. But Mary soon finds that her new “profession” leaves more marks on her own psyche than on her freakish clientele.
If this is your first introduction to the film, you might be wondering why people are making such a big fuss over it. Well one of the primary factors is that the Soska Sisters are a pair of rising talents in the horror industry. Their first big hit was Dead Hooker in a Trunk and garnered them a great deal of attention.
When they announced their next project, American Mary, there were some pretty high expectations. And by all accounts it seems as if they managed to exceed what people had been expecting. At Screamfest 2012 they took home five awards for Mary including “Best Director” and “Best Actress.” So the hype train has been riding pretty hard for this movie and for good reason.
We’ll just have to wait patiently till May 31st. Or you can cash in a little earlier and catch it on VOD May 16th.
