Wanted: Frederick Charles Krueger

Wanted: Frederick Charles KruegerI love nostalgia, my childhood was filled with some of the most iconic films that went on to spawn countless sequels. Okay, maybe some of the sequels should never of happened, but, damn, what a time it was. So sitting here, I’m reminiscing on old times, remembering the first time I laid witness to some of cinemas most terrifying characters in horror and wondering, where have you gone?

I know many of you are probably glad that some of these franchises, films, characters have ended, but me, I thrive for more. I’m like a sponge, a totally fan-boy and I crave for more. So with this editorial, I’m looking back at past films, characters, whatever it maybe and wondering, where are they?

So, first up is Frederick Charles Krueger, well, we all know him as Freddy Krueger and the brainchild of Wes Craven. To tell you the truth, A Nightmare on Elm Street was one of the first horror films I witnessed as a little nipper back in the 80′s, and let me tell you, I was freakin’ hooked! There was just something about Krueger that I found so fascinating. The idea that someone, something could invade your most personal thoughts/fantasies via your dreams and totally alter them.

Not only that, but you could wake up dead. There was no escaping this fiend, this monster. With other serial killers you could run, hide maybe even get up the strength to go one-on-one, but someone in your dreams was just, damn, man, that’s not fair!

Such a brilliant idea only made better by the man behind the mask, Robert Englund. Freddy Krueger first burst onto our screens back in 1984 in A Nightmare on Elm Street where he terrorized a group of teens, but he didn’t count on the tenacity of one Nancy Thompson.

With her quick thinking and ability to adjust to the dream world, she was in fact, Krueger’s worst nightmare, but to be fair, they fed off of each other and really need the other to keep themselves alive. Its basically a marriage, but damn, did they give us an awesome time or what.

Freddy Krueger has become a household name ever since his first appearance in film. He has become bigger than the films themselves, but sadly, over time he became a sort of laughing stock, losing his ability to scare and simply spout out one-liners. Still, it was great, but it was nothing compared to his former self.

Although, thankfully Wes Craven gave back Freddy’s edge in New Nightmare and captured his foreboding evil and he was scary again, but unfortunately Freddy remained dormant for nearly ten years, only to return in Freddy vs. Jason. While it was great to have Freddy back, it wasn’t what I wanted, I wanted Freddy back in Elm Street. I didn’t care how, I just wanted him back.

I thought, yes, with Freddy vs. Jason, perhaps this will ignite a new Nightmare on Elm Street film, will we get Freddy back to his roots just like Craven reignited nearly a decade earlier? No. It was dead. The only talk was a sequel to Freddy vs. Jason with many other names being thrown around, THIS wasn’t what I wanted to hear. But then my worst nightmare came true. A remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street was announced, and Robert Englund wouldn’t be playing Freddy Krueger for the first time… Ever! My heart sank.

My hope of another Elm Street sequel was squashed just like that. This my friends was the end…

So I ask, where is Freddy Krueger? Where are all the Elm Street fans? Is it just me that wants another Elm Street film with Robert Englund back behind the mask?

Hopefully I’m not alone. Its been far to long, and I think, as fans, we deserve at least one more. So what about it? How would you like to see Freddy Krueger return to our screens?

I’ve been very vocal about this for many years, but I’ve always longed for a prequel to A Nightmare on Elm Street, we have seen other directors visions of what happened, but I would love to see what Wes Craven has in mind, since, this is, was his creation.

So I’m calling on you Wes, do us Elm Street fans a favor and give us the birth of one of the most iconic villains ever committed to film, and don’t hold back, you created this monster, we want to see its roots.

However, failing that, a sequel to the original franchise would give me closure. Its been far to long since we have feared the words, Freddy Krueger.

Now, I hope you enjoyed reading that, and perhaps it has got you in the mood for more Elm Street goods. So, now I’m calling on you. Would you like to see another “Wanted” editorial or should I live it? Give me a heads up as well as some suggestions you would like to see. Be it a character, film, whatever. What horror related icon, film, product etc would you like to see return?
