Kevin Durand Signs Up For The Strain

Jason McDonald

Yesterday we told you that Corey Stoll had been cast as the lead in Guillermo del Toro’s TV adaptation of The Strain.  The casting news continues today as we’re learning that Kevin Durand has signed up for the vampire-themed FX series.

The Strain is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Centers for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

Variety is reporting that Kevin will play a second-generation Ukranian-American, a once-solitary rat exterminator who eagerly joins the war against vampires who have invaded New York.  Carlton Cuse, who is working as a showrunner on the series, previously worked with Durand when he served as an Executive Producer on the TV series Lost.

Guillermo del Toro has signed on to direct the pilot based on a script that he wrote with co-writer Chuck Hogan.  The two also co-wrote the original book series that The Strain is based upon.

The three books are awesome. Great source material for what I’m hoping will be an epic show. Is anyone else loving how popular horror is getting in TV land? American Horror Story, Hannibal and Bates Motel (bit cheesier but still pretty good). Bring it on. As Sinatra once sang…”I’ve got high hopes”.
