United Nations Moves to Ban Real Life Terminator Robot

Herner Klenthur

I never once thought that I would live in an age when James Cameron’s 1984 movie The Terminator would become a reality. According to Macleans a leading news magazine the United Nations has released a report calling for the out right ban of autonomous war machines that hunt and kill humans on the battlefield without human control.

Put plainly they want an end put to the development of real life Terminators that are now being deployed world wide. Although the report was released because many countries including the US, Britian, Israel and South Korea are all developing them some are not just nightmares of the future.

The North / South Korean border and the DMZ zone is a very scary place but more so if you are North Korea. Samsung has a new real life terminator called teh SGR-A1 stationed on the DMZ that has replaced soldiers in the field and is ripped right out of the Terminator films. At a cost of $200,000 a piece these robots have the ability to detect and destroy enemy troops with an ‘autonomous mode’ or ‘under human control’

The Samsung SGR-A1 is as scary as they come. It can identify and kill targets 2.5 miles away from it with twin optical and infrared sensors during daylight and about half that distance during the night. The robot which is armed with a 5.56 K- machine gun also has an on board communication system so that ‘friendly’ soldiers are given a warning and an opportunity to give the robot a ‘safe word’ before facing the outcome of being on the wrong side of its steel boot.

I would suggest the UN report should probably look at the words of a wise man named Asimov;

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

Side Note: South Korea when they went to Iraq brought along their robot friends to guard their bases for them. Anyone else ready to upgrade their zombie bunker to keep out robots to?
