Wanted: Satan’s Little Helper

Chris Savage

Satan's Little Helper 1Wanted” is an ongoing editorial where I look back at past films, characters and everything in-between, and in doing so, bringing back some memories, good or bad and suggesting that we revisit these films and question if a sequel/remake will work?

So this time around, I’m looking back at Jeff Lieberman’s slasher flick Satan’s Little Helper. Going back a few years, well, 2005 to be precise, I stumbled upon a little indie film which instantly caught my eye with its title. Of course this turned out to be Satan’s little Helper.

Going in I wasn’t expecting much, as I assumed from the cover that this was going to be yet another Halloween-esque flick and not offering much in terms of originality. Oh how wrong I was.

From the moment this one started and all the way to the closer credits, I was in awe. At the time of viewing I said to myself, “yep, we have a new franchise on our hands”. I was absolutely stoked by this. Lieberman, had created a new boogeyman, he was going to be besides the likes of Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees… Or at-least I thought.

Years went by and nothing. I was and still am scratching my head as to why? Satan’s Little Helper was one of the most intriguing slasher films I have seen in years. It was the perfect mix of satire and horror. But after doing some reading it turns out many people don’t agree with my view, and perhaps this negativity had something to stop this film from becoming the next big franchise?

But then again, maybe not. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be. Either way, I loved the whole idea of Douglas ‘Dougie’ Whooly (Alexander Brickel) being obsessed with the video game Satan’s Little Helper, and then believing that all the killings were just part of a game. Better yet, Satan Man (Joshua Annex), truly gave his character life and transformed what could have been a run-of-the-mill slasher into something else. I just thought it was brilliant.

So, looking back on this one I’m thinking, where’s the sequel? I want more Satan’s Little Helper dammit! I feel there is so much more to the character Satan Man, and we have only just scratched the surface. As much as I loved the black comedy aspect, perhaps a sequel could go much darker? I would love to see what else Lieberman could do with this one. I just feel that we have missed out on the next big thing.

Anyway, this is an open letter to Jeff Lieberman. I love what you have done with the genre over the years and for that I will always be grateful, but why no Satan’s Little Helper 2? I feel this had tremendous potential, and I know the cult following will be behind me when I say, we want a sequel!

Still, who knows. Maybe its just the simple fact that funds are not available and no-one is willing to take a shot. Now if a sequel was to happen with say something like Kickstarter or Indiegogo, I’d be all over it in a heartbeat giving what I could to help the cause. Bu tperhaps I’m just an over opinionated fan-boy, either way, I think the whole idea was/is awesome and a sequel just makes complete sense to me.

Then again, perhaps its far too late and a missed opportunity, I guess we will never know.

Now, I want to hear from you. I know we all have differing opinions, and I don’t expect everyone to agree with mine. That’s what makes this site so great, the diversity. So, hit the comments below and share your views. Would you like to see more Satan’s Little Helper, or perhaps you couldn’t care less?

Hell yes! I just loved this film. They did so much with basically just a guy in a mask, ’twas chilling and hilarious all at once. A big “yay!” to a sequel!

I liked the movie, but does it need a sequel? I don’t think so.

I was surprised by this. One of the best slasher indie films I have seen. I still haven’t seen Smiley looking forward to that.

Just watched it last night after reading this article. Despite some of the silliness and cheese, I loved it. Absolutely loved it. Definitely a second viewing is worth it.

This is a prime example of why this site rocks. I’ve never heard of this film before yet now it is at the top of my list to view. Thanks chris, keep up the good work. The wanted ed is a great idea for this very reason.

Thanks for the kind words Ash. Glad you like the “wanted” editorial. :) We all love horror here and we each bring something different to the table, it really is an awesome site.

Just seen the movie Chris and I felt it was pretty bad I have to say. The acting really ruined any credibility found in the plot. The overall idea was quite good and some of the surprises at the end but the amateurish point-and-shoot direction prevented any kind of tension. I say a remake or better sequel is ripe for this movie!

At least you gave it a shot. I for one loved it. 😀 And yep, I’m all for a sequel, even a remake sounds good in my book.
