Archie Comics May Come to Theaters With Zombies

Jason McDonald

I never thought I’d see the day where I could legitimately talk about Archie Comics on a horror movie website.  I know it’s a twisted combination, but my childhood was supplemented with a healthy diet of horror movies and Archie Comics.  Now the two are about to be married in a way I never thought possible.

Deadline has learned that the Riverdale gang is heading to the big screen! Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica (who was the real hottie) have been purchased by Warner Bros. Pictures who wish to adapt the classic comic into a live action adaptation.  Jason Moore (“Pitch Perfect“) has been attached to direct the feature and Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa, who recently wrote the remakes of “Carrie” and “The Town that Dreaded Sundown“, has been brought on to write the script.

So here’s where the zombie speculation comes in, because nothing has been confirmed.  Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa actually wrote an Archie comic series called “Afterlife with Archie” which pitted the Riverdale gang against hordes of zombies.   Here’s what Roberto had to say about the series when it was first released:

What if the Archie characters found themselves in a Stephen King novel like The Stand or a Sam Raimi movie like The Evil Dead? Could we pull that off, tonally? We’re really going for it. The first arc is called ‘Escape from Riverdale’. The second arc is called, brace yourself, ‘Betty RIP’.

So, for now, the zombie element to the Archie movie is just a bunch of heavy speculation.  However, I can’t be alone in thinking this would be kind of awesome, right?  It’s an insanely dumb idea, but the kind that could be hilarious and fun if executed in the right way.  I’m willing to give it a chance. How about you?
