FX continues to build an impressive cast for it’s upcoming vampire drama from writer/director Guillermo del Toro. This time around they’ve added a legendary Oscar-nominated actor to their roster. Deadline has learned that John Hurt is re-teaming with del Toro for FX’s “The Strain.”
“The Strain” is based on a trilogy of books written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. Joining the two creative talents will be Carlton Cuse (“Bates Motel”) who is helping to develop the series. Hurt will join a cast that already includes Corey Stoll (“House of Cards”), Kevin Durand (“Fruitvale Station”) and Mia Maestro (“Person of Interest”).
Here’s the description we have so far for the show:
The Strain is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Centers for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.
Hurt will play Professor Abraham Setrakian “a holocaust survivor who immigrated to the U.S. after World War II and now runs a pawn shop in Spanish Harlem. As the outbreak spreads, he may be the only one with answers- if anyone will listen.” The project will mark a reunion for John Hurt and Guillermo del Toro who previously worked together on “Hellboy.”
