It seems sadly fitting that a fighting series about monsters just refuses to die. In the latest round of “will they/won’t they”, Capcom has come out once again to squash the hopes of Darkstalkers fans worldwide.
Speaking with Siliconera, fighting game manager for Capcom Matt Dahlgren revealed that a new Darkstalkers game is unlikely due to the poor sales surrounding “Darkstalkers Resurrection.”
“Darkstalkers Resurrection’ did not perform as well as we would have liked to perform. You never know what the future may hold, but “Street Fighter” is definitely not dead.
He then went on to add that there were no plans for anything related to the fighting game series “on the immediate horizon.” Well, that certainly doesn’t sound too hopeful for fans.
It seems unfair, though, to judge the future of a franchise based on how well a HD-remix pack of older gamers that have been released before sells. A re-release like “Darkstalkers Resurrection” was never going to move an enormous amount of units, the demand for those older titles just isn’t there. Instead, Capcom seems content to hedge their bets with “safe” moves like putting out another edition of “Street Fighter IV.” The Darkstalkers franchise may not be the piggy bank Capcom would like it to be, but it would be nice to see a game company take a risk every now and then. Maybe listening to their fans would pay off for once.
