Yes the time has finally arrived. V/H/S 2 previously S V/H/S, is premiering tonight in the US on limited release. I got a chance to check it out back in April when it was making the rounds at the 2013 Florida Film Festival, and I wasn’t quite sure what to think about it at first…but more on that later.
For those who don’t know, V/H/S 2 is the followup to the 2012 VOD cult favorite V/H/S, which featured an anthology of strange and supernatural VHS tapes viewed by a group of burglars hired to break into a house to retrieve an unknown item.
V/H/S 2 presents the same basic premise, except we’re following a team of private investigators hired to find a missing college student who eventually watch the tapes and you can pretty much guess what happens next.
V/H/S 2 added three household names to their director’s roster including Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale of The Blair Witch Project as well as Gareth Huw Evans of The Raid. Being an avid and vocal fan of the prequel, I was disappointed to find that I was laughing hysterically along with the rest of the theater during the premiere.
It seems the V/H/S franchise migrated from being a genuinely unique and creepy experience, to b-horror movie territory (listen to the final piece of dialogue in the “Safe Haven” segment and you’ll know what I mean). That’s not to say it was a bad movie, but it certainly was not anything I expected from seeing the first V/H/S.
But who knows? You might like it and have to hurry home to change your undergarments. Read our review of VHS 2
