A few months ago we told you that director Timur Bekmambetov was producing a film about killer squirrels. So far the production has a couple of writers attached, Daniel Antoniazzi and Ben Shiffrin, who are drafting a script based around Bekmambetov’s idea. No director or actors have been announced, but we do have something to share with you.
Yesterday the “Squirrels” YouTube channel put out a pre-production sales trailer. Now, this isn’t a full-fledged trailer like you would you see in the theaters. It’s more of a proof of concept, to show people in the industry what they’re aiming for.
Based on what they show in the trailer, which you can view below, this could easily be another “Piranha 3D.” I know that film gets a mixed reaction, but it’s easily one of my favorite big budget B-movie productions. If “Squirrels” can match the hilarity and violence of that film, it could be a surprise hit within the horror community.
Here’s a brief synopsis of the film:
When a young man’s estranged father is killed under suspicious circumstances, he returns home for the first time in years to get to the bottom of the mystery. Hoping to uncover some logical explanation, he instead finds his mom’s sleazy new boyfriend, a natural gas company buying up the town, an angry female sheriff who happens to be his ex-girlfriend, and an army of flesh-eating squirrels hellbent on destroying everything in their path due to an erosion of their food chain as a result of environmental destruction by the gas company.
Check out the trailer and let us know what you think.
