New Friday the 13th TV Series and Movie Still in the Works

And possibly a new video game! Today is Friday the 13th (September 13th, 2013 in case you’re reading this in the far flung future) and with that infamous day usually comes some sort of announcement or interview with someone who had some involvement with the “Friday the 13th” franchise.

In this case, FearNet sat down to talk with Sean Cunningham to reflect about the slasher movie series and to talk about it’s potential future.  During the chat, Cunningham dropped some interesting tidbits about the often rumored sequel to the Friday the 13th reboot that came out a few years ago.  In his answer he seems pretty optimistic that things could be happening soon.

There will be another Friday the 13th, which will probably get shot in the spring. If it all goes as I would like, it would then be released at the beginning of 2015.

I hope that bit of news pans out, because I really loved the latest “Friday the 13th” film.  Jason was intense and scary again and the characters and story were decent enough to be engaging.  Speaking of which, will the new film follow up on those characters?

That’s not likely, but it’s hard to know. It won’t be a continuation of that story, though. It’ll be a fresh story.

Damn, well it’s probably better to keep moving ahead.  Maybe they’ll consider that rumored sequel that was going to be set at Camp Crystal Lake during a snowstorm.  That really sounded like a cool setting for some visceral kills.

Cunningham didn’t stop there, though, he also revealed that they were still interested in bringing Jason Voorhees back to TV.

I think there will also be Friday the 13th: Crystal Lake Chronicles, which is sort of a Smallville. We’ve been on-again off-again with that for years and there are a bunch of great stories to be told, but I think the way that it’s finally going to get delivered is not through a conventional television network, but through the Internet. I can’t tell you who the delivery people will be, but it won’t be the traditional route. There’s also the possibility of webisodes, and I think we even have an idea for a terrific Friday the 13th video game.

I don’t know if Smallville is the best show to compare your horror TV show with, but I’m pretty intrigued by the idea that they’re looking to bring it to the net instead of TV.  That at least opens it up to the possibility of being as gory, violent, and filled with nudity as the movie series.   Perhaps Netflix could be a potential venue?

Also, an idea for a new Jason game?  That’s really awesome.  Horror gaming is back in a big way and if they were to able somehow capture the feel of a “Friday the 13th” film in the form of a game, then you’d have a surefire hit.  Well, at least a bigger hit than that NES version.

It’s nice to see that on this the unluckiest of days, there’s still a chance Jason could return to our lives.  It seems like it’s been forever since we last him and I think he’s been dearly missed.
