This past weekend we have some good news and some not so good when it comes to the domestic box-office. First off, in its second week, Alfonso Cuaron’s space thriller, Gravity, is still on top taking on all new comers and raking in more of the green while Machete Kills, is unfortunately trailing behind.
According to Deadline, Gravity took in a staggering $44.2M for its second weekend, which brings its cume to $123.4M! According to a poll, 6% had already seen the film twice, so I can only assume that this one is fairly awesome. But, I will let you guys be the judge on that.
And then there was Machete Kills from Robert Rodriguez. The film fell to the #4 spot before plummeting further to the #5 spot. The film is estimated to have took $3.7M for its domestic weekend, which is less than half of what the distributor had hoped for.
Open Road Films apparently spent $20M on marketing alone! And while marketing is good, if not great, i have to say that sometimes less is more. I mean, the film had a slew of trailers, clips, TV spots and whatever else, I’m surprised if we all haven’t seen the film already due to this.
But, it is what it is. the first Machete film grossed $26M, so I guess we will just have to see how this plays out and perhaps it will do much better Internationally.
