New Evil Dead Sequel is Dead : Writers Drop Out

Ryan Sternfels 45 Comments

Seems like we might be waiting a bit longer for a sequel to the 2013 remake of Evil Dead.  The hotly debated film brought in newcomers Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues as screenwriters with Alvarez in the director’s chair.  They even signed on producer Robert Tapert from the original, as well as horror-master Sam Raimi, and even Bruce Campbell himself to produce the remake.

We were teased with the possibility of a sequel during WonderCon, and even Alvarez himself said they were working on the script.  It appears this is no longer the case due to a recent interview with Gorosito.TV:

Look, I am sorry to tell you this but that movie won’t happen. Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved. We left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things. I don’t know if the producers still have intentions of making it. But what I can tell you is that we are not part of that project.

His statement seems a little hostile if you ask me, so I wonder how and when things went wrong.  As Alvarez unfortunately stated, he doesn’t even know if the producers are planning on a sequel.  However, Army of Darkness still has the greenlight primarily thanks to the push of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, the latter of which plans to reprise his role as Ash.

Are you disappointed to hear of Alvarez and Sayagues‘ departure from the franchise?  Let us know in the comments!  And check out the trailer for Evil Dead (2013) below.

This ended up being a bunch of confusion about what was said. Fede Alvarez responded himself that they are still doing the next movie

        Good. The remake was horrible.

      8. Don J Krouskop November 1, 2013 at 9:47 pm

This was reported several days ago by many major horror and genre film websites, only to be debunked by Fede Alvarez, who tweeted that people shouldn’t believe everything they read on the internet. Old non-news.

And haters should feel free to suck it. Hard. ‘Til they choke. To death. The 2013 EVIL DEAD was excellent.

That’s your opinion :) In my opinion it was okay, but, then again look at most horror movies today (i.e. ALL the Paranormal Activities) they suck and literally put you to sleep :)

          No counting for taste…..

Good cause the first one sucked….big balls.

      17. Patrick Hughes November 1, 2013 at 9:59 pm

GOOD, the writing and dialogue were terrible in the remake anyway.

      18. Joe Minicilli November 1, 2013 at 10:00 pm

False reporting, unfortunately. Its still a go with Fede ( though I wish it wasnt), its just that Army of Darkness 2 is taking a priority over Evil Dead.

How can anyone who liked the original possibly say the remake was worse. Put them side by side people. 33 years in technology has definately improved the movie 100 fold. Wow some people can’t see the forest for the trees. Loved the remake. Original had atmosphere i guess and clever camera techniques but nothing as good as the 2013 remake. Why do you all think they made the same film twice back in the 80’s…cause the first one was rubbish and so was the 1st so called sequel. Just because it was the first doesn’t make it good.

        • John DeGroot November 2, 2013 at 11:17 pm

Sorry but the first one is awesome. The only thing that is rubbish is your taste in films.

So many people hated the remake, but what did they love about the original? The terrible acting, accidental humor, awful continuity, lack of character development or the cardboard sets?

cardboard sets? it was shot on a real location, no sets of anykind. you sure you actually saw the orignal? all the humour was intentional too. i’ll take it over the over-produced hollywood version anyday.

The bookshelves that fall on Ash are barely made of particle board. They used alot of cardboard and garbage for the props. The audio commentary on the original DVD by Bruce Cambell points out all the accidental humor and awful acting.

I love the movie though. Amazing mood, camera work, music and extreme violence. I just also recognize it’s excessive failures and cheesiness.

I think most of the issues you listed Brain were actually intentional for the most part on the filmmaker’s part. And Good Acting=Horror Films shouldn’t belong together lol. Rarely, is there Oscar winning acting in horror films.

Oh, and I thought the remake was ok.

        GOOD!!! Great news!

      23. Ichabod Crane November 1, 2013 at 10:29 pm

If it was really dead, that’d be good news. But unfortunately I have a bad feeling someone else will make the sequel anyway.

      24. Vincent Tubito November 1, 2013 at 10:33 pm

        It was too gory

      25. Mariah Birginity November 1, 2013 at 10:41 pm

        THANK GOD

      26. Adam Roddis November 1, 2013 at 11:00 pm

Don’t give a Fuck. I’m only interested in what Raimi and Bruce do. As long as Army of Darkness 2 happens, all is good.

      27. Roy Lee M November 1, 2013 at 11:06 pm

Total BS. The remake was a success and Alavarez is still on. Idiot haters try to start shit.

      30. David Cuerda November 2, 2013 at 8:26 am

Evil Dead Sequel is On, reconfirmed by Fede on Twitter ;)

      31. Levi Everaerts November 2, 2013 at 11:45 am

People who say the remake (which wasn’t a remake) was an epic fail have major issues with accepting the fact that horror didn’t die in the 90’s.

        • John DeGroot November 2, 2013 at 11:20 pm

          Ummm yes it did .
