The Internet literally blew up with various news sources regarding a sequel to The Purge and while that is all well and good, there was nothing officially confirmed. However, the guys over at Variety have now officially confirmed that indeed The Purge 2 is going ahead and we have all the early details.
According to the site, James DeMonaco is returning to write and direct the sequel for Universal and Blumhouse. Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and Sebastien Lemercier are also returning to produce the upcoming sequel.
Also, Blumhouse is also in line to receive a $2.25 million tax credit from the state of California for The Purge 2, and if it is cleared, this will cover 25% of the budget for the film.
Now, with the original film making $34 million at the domestic box office from a budget of just $3 million, it was always inevitable that a sequel would surface, but I ask you, do we really need a sequel?
