Loved Chucky. Hated Evil Dead. OK, I didn’t hate it but it just wasn’t very good.

Actually, Insidious Chapter 2 WINS! The first one, not so much, but the second one killed it. Blew The Conjuring out of the water. Best one in recent years.

        • Tim Bearden
Tim Bearden November 2, 2013 at 11:46 pm

No, the first was fantastic and scary. Two wasn’t scary at all, though it was a good movie. Plus without the first movie two wouldn’t have worked at all since a third of the movie referenced back to the first. Kinda like Back to the Future 2 did.

        • Paula Hubley
Paula Hubley November 2, 2013 at 11:50 pm

I didn’t find the first one even remotely scary. And was laughing at the end when Darth Maul showed up. Not saying the second one was that scary (only thing that really scared me was The Shining…back in the day), but I thought they did a really good job on it. Tying both flicks together. Made a lot of sense (I thought) and it worked well. Another one I really enjoyed was A Haunting in Connecticut 2. Not the first one…that was silly…but the second one I really liked. Interesting, people’s opinions. I can tell you one thing…The Conjuring wasn’t scary…and I think it’s because I saw so many clips/previews. Nothing was a shocker.

      15. Minh Duck Le November 2, 2013 at 6:01 pm

The Evil Dead was a pretty good film for a remake.

The Conjuring and oh…did I mention, The Conjuring! LOL

      18. D.S. Ullery November 2, 2013 at 6:03 pm

The Conjuring. Not only was it absolutely terrifying, but it took the time to invest me in the characters, so it also scored major points as a human story. That’s why I’m naming this movie as my best of 2013 and not something like Pacific Rim or You’re Next, which looked good and had their moments, but didn’t really get under my skin. I actually came to care about this family and I really ending up liking the Warrens. By the climax, it mattered to me whether or not these people managed to survive their horrifying encounter with the supernatural. There’s a strong lesson for other filmmakers and the studios backing them here – horror fans prize a good story and genuine characters over special effects and buckets of blood any day.

      19. Jeff Deitrich November 2, 2013 at 6:04 pm

The Conjuring is scary? What a steaming pile of crap. My 6 year old and I were laughing the whole way through it… Was the only way to combat the sheer boredom.

          One more for Evil Dead!

Conjuring was alright, but really, really unoriginal, and didn’t deliver on the ending. Evil Dead left me in tears.

      22. Justin William Esquivel November 2, 2013 at 6:10 pm

        Evil Dead

      23. Levi Everaerts November 2, 2013 at 6:10 pm

Curse of Chucky, Evil Dead, Carrie. American Mary technically is a 2012 film and therefore doesn’t count.

      24. Lionne Caro November 2, 2013 at 6:11 pm

      25. Michael Pickle November 2, 2013 at 6:12 pm

      35. Tony Eastridge November 2, 2013 at 6:26 pm

No vote this year! There has not been any REAL scary movies out for awhile now!

      36. Jesse Lane Moore November 2, 2013 at 6:30 pm

The conjuring with Evil Dead an honorable mention.

      37. Fred Pagé November 2, 2013 at 6:31 pm

Evil dead and The Conjuring.Maniac is also very good!

      38. Cory Dean November 2, 2013 at 6:32 pm

        evil dead

      39. Merryn Western November 2, 2013 at 6:33 pm

Imma just assume that the people opting for the conjuring haven’t actually seen a horror movie before.

        I enjoyed mama.

      40. Jesse Lane Moore November 2, 2013 at 6:35 pm

Right merrin which is why we joined a horror movie fb page. How is Mama considered more horror than Conjuring?

      41. Jeremy Arruda November 2, 2013 at 6:36 pm

I didn’t really like any horror movies this year to be honest.

      42. Jill Schrader November 2, 2013 at 6:41 pm

Evil Dead, American Mary, or Maniac

      43. Jill Schrader November 2, 2013 at 6:45 pm

I posted in the link, but will here as well. Evil Dead, American Mary, and Maniac. I can’t believe so many people liked The Conjuring. That is unfortunate.

        • Matthew Baxter
Matthew Baxter November 2, 2013 at 6:53 pm

Couldn’t agree more. I was surprised 2 remakes made my list this year but they are both fantastic. I need to rewatch American Mary, I missed a lot of it. But yeah, The Conjuring was terrible. Same goes for The Purge. I did really like You’re Next though.

        • Jill Schrader
Jill Schrader November 2, 2013 at 6:56 pm

Yeah, The Purge was good conceptually, but the characters and story fell way too flat…

        • Dilyana Delcheva
Dilyana Delcheva November 3, 2013 at 10:38 am

Yep, The Conjuring has the worst ending ever. The Purge had a cool idea to start with but I didn’t like the final result as much as I thought I would.

        • Maxwell Dean (Vasquez) November 4, 2013 at 5:42 pm

And I can’t believe are voting for an only slightly better than average remake for best horror of 2013. American Mary for one had INFINTE times more originality within it than Evil Dead.

      44. Christina November 2, 2013 at 6:45 pm

I can’t even consider Mama a horror movie. The Conjuring was fine, but not very original in my opinion. I say Insidious 2.

      45. Matthew Baxter November 2, 2013 at 6:50 pm

The Conjuring and The Purge were by far the biggest let downs for me. Evil Dead and You’re Next are worlds more entertaining.

      46. Miguel Farias Jr November 2, 2013 at 6:55 pm

        The Conjuring and Insidious!!!!

      47. Jesse Lane Moore November 2, 2013 at 6:56 pm

I’m going by what I’ve seen from this year. Maniac is not as accessible to me as I’d like. Trust me though, I’ve seen my fair share of horror from Craven to Argento to Hitchcock from the silent era to now. I liked Mama, but not as much as the other two I mentioned.

      48. Kelly James Mullinix November 2, 2013 at 6:58 pm

The Conjuring hands down. With the Maniac remake in second place.

      49. Jesse Lane Moore November 2, 2013 at 6:59 pm

The Purge was a missed opportunity. Such a great premise was given a typical home invasion story.

      50. Nicole R Morin November 2, 2013 at 7:00 pm

        Insidious 2

      51. Donna Burgess November 2, 2013 at 7:06 pm

I liked The Conjuring and Insidious 2. Also, Mama & Dark Skies from earlier in the year.

      52. Ted Swift November 2, 2013 at 7:10 pm

Sharknado- in a year where only the Evil Dead remake was truly worthwhile it was nice to laugh my ass off at something.

      53. Wolffy November 2, 2013 at 7:16 pm

        Evil Dead.

      54. Shauna Wilson November 2, 2013 at 7:29 pm

        Maniac remake.

      55. Shauna Wilson November 2, 2013 at 7:30 pm

I can’t believe anyone liked Evil Dead. It was as bad (almost) as Lords of Salem.

      56. Patrick Lubben November 2, 2013 at 7:34 pm

The Conjuring and 2nd was Insidious 2

      66. Maxwell Dean November 2, 2013 at 9:01 pm

Surprised Evil Dead is getting so many votes – in my humble opinion it slightly better than average. In trying to simply shock us through excessive gore in combination with a serious narrative it was like the worst of the so called torture porn films. It also reminded me of the worst of TP films like Hostel with its grungy look. What made a the original a cult classic is that it was equally funny and downright creepy/scary in parts. The remake due to its filmmaking approach was neither and so overall very forgettable for me, despite some specific moments like the blood drenched finale.

      67. Chris Huchingson November 2, 2013 at 9:06 pm

I vote for Mama. It didnt use “gore” to make its statement. And it had a very “Darkness Falls” feel to it. I dont mind gore, but Id LOVE to see more REALLY scary movies that dont DEPEND on it..

      68. Jonathan November 2, 2013 at 9:50 pm

I really enjoyed Evil Dead, but it wasnt really scary & The Conjuring was okay, nothing major – trailers ruined most of the scares for me

I’ll have to say You’re Next (even though it was technically a black comedy and made in 2011)

      69. Eduardo Pezua November 2, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Conjuring, I’m afraid to watch it again but I want to , was so good

      70. Paulo November 2, 2013 at 10:07 pm

My vote goes to Evil Dead. Almost never i get to go to the movies and Evil Dead was one of these rare cases.Me and my girlfriend didnt have much to do and got a double screen session. First we watched the shitty The last exorcism part 2, which almost made we go home because it was the lamest movie ever. Then we watched Evil Dead, which was pretty cool cinematography wise. The take on the genre was not amazing, cause really, its not scary. But the make up, the direction, the production value, and the gore is awesome.
As this year nothing really exciting got the light of the day, i choose Evil dead.

      71. Toby Woon November 2, 2013 at 10:25 pm

        The Conjuring

Sadly, I’d say Curse of Chucky and Hatchet III. For the lack of a better option.

      77. Amanda November 3, 2013 at 1:15 am

I’m kind of surprised no one said Dark Skies. That movie freaked me out. I loved it. Although I think, out of loyalty to the Evil Dead franchise, thats probably the one that would get my official vote. An acquired taste maybe… but a genuinely good remake that could have ended up being a piece of crap.

      86. rez3 November 3, 2013 at 12:06 pm

A far better remake in my opinion and my personal N.1 horror from 2013 is We Are What We Are – like the best contemporary remakes it takes the original story and infuses it with some originality through its narrative. That would be my number 1 with Frankenstein’s Army very close behind. FA has some AMAZING and original creature design and effects.

My highest ranking movie for October was Guillermo del Toro’s “Mama” – it got 5 out of 5 hairy eyeballs from me.

      104. Nick G. November 4, 2013 at 9:23 pm

Two words…. Evil Dead. The Conjuring was also excellent!

      105. Bikubang November 5, 2013 at 12:22 am

The Conjuring, hands down, anyone that says is was a terrible movie is just a filthy horror movie hipster. It was too successful in theaters so you have to hate on it.

        • ThatJeffGuy November 9, 2013 at 8:03 pm

You hit the nail right on the head!!!

Definitely American Mary… if that counts. If not, than the Evil Dead remake was great and The Conjuring was pretty good as well.

I can’t believe nobody has mentioned YOU’RE NEXT!!!! Hands down, the best horror movie this year. PERIOD. This movie has it all: gore, suspense, cool masks, good acting, bad ass hot survivor chick, home invasion twist, 80’s synth music….what’s NOT to like.

I also can’t believe how many people are listing THE CONJURING as the best horror movie of the year. Are you guys tweens who are new to the genre? Any other explanation just doesn’t cut it. I know everyone has their own opinion, but damn, really? And MAMA? GTF outta here. AMERICAN MARY? Ok I still don’t get the hype surrounding this. Where’s the horror?

Evil Dead was pretty cool I’ll admit, but it doesn’t even come close to the ORIGINAL. Maniac was a far better remake, but it was missing something – oh yeah the shotgun exploding head scene, the most memorable image from the original. It was kind of like the atrocious Nightmare On Elm Street remake leaving out the “Johnny Deep being sucked into his bed” scene.

CURSE OF CHUCKY was decent, but no way was it horror movie of the year.

I still need to see INSIDIOUS 2 and CARRIE remake, but I doubt they will be contenders.

        Actual worthy contenders (IMO) include:
        NO ONE LIVES
ALL HALLOW’S EVE (really just for “Terrifier”)
        THE PURGE

      111. Jeff Carson November 6, 2013 at 2:42 am

        Anyone say The Conjuring yet?

      112. Dread World (@dread_world) November 6, 2013 at 12:40 pm

        Maniac remake….

      113. Brandon November 6, 2013 at 2:46 pm

        1. The Conjuring, 2. Evil Dead, 3. American Mary, 4. Dark Skies (very underrated)… The worst, 1. Texas Chainsaw, 2. Mama..

      114. Andrew November 6, 2013 at 8:21 pm

American Mary, followed closely by Mama.

      115. A.H. November 6, 2013 at 8:35 pm

        You’re Next, imo…

      116. Michiel November 6, 2013 at 10:31 pm

I agree with A.H. You’re Next was a great movie! I also liked “grabbers”, was a fun monster movie! Evil Dead was awesome and Chucky was some good throwback fun! Frankenstein’s Army had some incredible creature design. VHS2 was also a great improvement over the first one.. Uhmm not quite sure if “this is the end” counts as a horror movie, but I loved that one :)

      117. THE BAT November 6, 2013 at 11:10 pm

        conjuring and mama

      118. chelseaw88 November 7, 2013 at 1:08 am

The Conjuring was the scariest by far. Dark Skies was definitely second and sadly underrated and forgotten. The Evil Dead wasn’t really scary as much as it was gory. Still a good movie though.
Bottom of the list, for me anyways, was Lords of Salem, Curse of Chucky, and VHS 2. SUPER disappointed in Lords of Salem. I’m a huge fan of Rob Zombie as a director and was super let down by this movie. With Curse of Chucky I was really excited because they got rid of his little punk ass son. It wasn’t as good as what I thought it was gonna be though. VHS 2 just fu**ing sucked.

How has no one voted for Stoker yet? Easily No.1 Horror movie of the year.
        1. Stoker
        2. American Mary
        3. Maniac

      122. K Hutch (@72nivek) November 7, 2013 at 1:19 pm

Frankenstein’s Army. The Conjuring was just a basic jump scare pile of rot (slow, boring and predictable). Evl Dead (as with Maniac) was ok but was a remake and not too much imagination needed to make.

      123. EDWARDphilips November 7, 2013 at 11:15 pm

        Seriously, EVIL DEAD.

      124. Tammy S November 7, 2013 at 11:30 pm

The Conjuring, Mama, Sinister, Evil Dead those were the ones that had me sweating and holding my hands to my eyes.

Tie between The Purge, Evil Dead, and The Conjuring. Hasn’t been a very good year for horror in my opinion. Insidious 2 was very disappointing.
