The Purge 2 Gets a New Lead Actor

Jason McDonald

I know that the first “Purge” was a film that inspired no great love or hate amongst moviegoers.  Overall, the reaction of the general public seemed to be that “The Purge” was simply “okay”.  However, while the critical reception was lukewarm, the film performed very well at the box office.  Not counting DVD sales, the film managed to pull in over $80 million on a shoestring budget.  So when someone inevitably asks “Why would they make a sequel to that movie?!” There’s your answer.

Awhile ago we learned that a sequel to “The Purge” was officially on the way.  It was reported that the films director and writer, James DeMonaco, had been brought back by Universal Pictures to helm the sequel.  Now we know who will be the leading actor.

Deadline is reporting that Frank Grillo has been signed on to lead the cast of “The Purge 2”.  The name might not be too familiar for some, but the man has had a prolific career with projects that include: “My Soul to Take”, “End of Watch”, “Zero Dark Thirty”, “The Grey”, and much more.  For my money, he’s a fantastic actor and it’s great to see him getting another leading role.

Details about his character and the plot of the picture are being kept under wraps for now, but we do know that it’ll hit theaters on June 20th, 2014.

The original film starred Ethan Hawke and was set in an America where all crime was legal on one day of the year known as “The Purge”.  It’s currently available on DVD and blu-ray if you’re interested in checking it out.

The Purge would have worked better as a showtime or hbo series. You could have explored how different groups acted and we’re treated with all kinds of variation. I loved the idea but the movie fell flat and a pg13 didn’t help

Daniel, it was actually rated R. It was okay. Could have explored the political issues more. The only reason for sequel as the article says is because the first one made money.

The first one was okay but I don’t really believe a sequel is going to work out. I think it would be a bit redundant unless they have some super secret up their sleeves. Also of course they got a new lead actor. They kinda killed the first main character off. Of course I suppose they could have done some ridiculous movie magic and brought him back. Eh… at least they didn’t do that.
