Friday The 13th Reboot is Ditching Jason! Say What?

Herner Klenthur

Earlier in the week Chris confirmed exclusively that Platinum Dunes was still working on making the upcoming Friday the 13th as a point of view horror film. Our collective heads all exploded upon reading the news.

Brad Full has confirmed what Chris wrote in his article during a recent interview with Crave. In the same interview Brad Fuller also made another shocking claim about the new Friday the 13th movie.  Brad Fuller announced that Friday the 13th wont even HAVE Jason in it. Umm wtf? Spoiler alert?

When asked whether Derek Mears or somebody else would play Jason he replied quote;

“I don’t know, because I don’t know if we’re going to have Jason.

Sorry what? Come again? Probably knowing that this comment would make our heads explode he followed it up with;

I don’t know which Jason we’re going to have. I can tell you this: I love Derek Mears, I love working with him and he’s a dream so we’d be lucky to have him.”

Anyone else starting to get the feeling that this wont end well? About the only way I can see them doing this without Jason would be to have the point of view be from Jasons  ala Maniac.

Larry Brown a long time reader of our site points out that we shouldn’t be to quick to attack the new direction that Brad Fuller is taking the Friday the 13th movie. Larry writes to remind us;

…the first Friday the 13th didn’t have Jason in the way most people see him.

So Brad Fuller could actually be trying to go back to the roots of the franchise? Reader Shawn Payer has his own take on the new film writing;

the news just keeps getting worse….So are they going to do the “Mrs.Voorhees” found footage remake where you don’t actually see her until the end? I really hope the movie surpasses my expectations, It should because my expectations for it are zero.

Thoughts? Does Season of The Witch come to mind? I for one think this idea is not what fans of the franchise want but that is mainly because I dont think fans want the franchise made any worse. At least it’s not a found footage movie!

If so it’ll be awesome. ‘Cause Season of the Witch is awesome.

UGH….the news just keeps getting worse, getting worse….So are they going to do the “Mrs.Voorhees” found footage remake where you don’t actually see her until the end? I really hope the movie surpasses my expectations, It should because my expectations for it are zero. LOL

      6. Trevor Schmitt January 13, 2014 at 12:38 pm

“If it doesn’t have Jason then it’s not a friday the 13th.” Oh really, is that a fact? I believe Kevin Bacon may disagree with you.

haha +1 for the Kevin Bacon reference 😛

somebody should get rid of the producer in a barrel of the dhalmer/roy demao special.

      8. Jerome Davis January 13, 2014 at 12:39 pm

sounds like they are starting with the mother again.

      9. Jhnsmm January 13, 2014 at 12:41 pm

        Ummm…that’s all I got, ummm. :-/

      10. Robert Daniels January 13, 2014 at 12:41 pm

No Jason. Sounds like a bad idea. Here’s a thought. Go back to the beginning or a prequel. From Mrs Vorhees point of view at the camp. Maybe there were more killings than just the two councilors we saw get killed at the beginning of the original Friday the 23th.

        • Michael Bryner June 7, 2016 at 7:02 am

Umm, there was more that two total in the movie killed. What did you watch just the beginning? The manager of the counselors and about five of the counselors were killed. 6 counselors and a manager. 6 killed and one left to fight mrs. voorhees. Why do people say things like they know stuff but can’t really say things right?

      11. Zac McHan January 13, 2014 at 12:42 pm

        Horse shit

      12. Joan January 13, 2014 at 12:43 pm

Without Jason there is no Friday the 13th don’t destroy this franchise like you did nightmare on elm street

        • The Mighty Deadpoolio January 13, 2014 at 7:56 pm

You realize that there was NO jason whatsoever in the first Friday the 13th right?

      13. Paul Shunk January 13, 2014 at 12:45 pm

I don’t really care since that 1st redo was a total piece of crap in my book. Hated it!

      14. Rod Petrie January 13, 2014 at 12:45 pm

How about they take that concept, take out the name Friday the 13th and any reference as such and make it a completely different film and just leave the Friday the 13th series alone.

This is as ridiculous as Halloween 8 being about an internet reality show in the Myer’s house.

        What next? Survivor: Crystal Lake

      15. William Driver January 13, 2014 at 12:47 pm

        Better have Jason in it

      16. Jacob French January 13, 2014 at 12:48 pm

are they crazy not to have Jason in the movie.

      17. Michael Rose Quintanilla January 13, 2014 at 12:49 pm

Jason wasn’t in the original either. His mother was the killer.

are you ok with a rehash or would you rather a) they just stop or b) get an original idea ?

        • Mark Harris
Mark Harris January 13, 2014 at 4:12 pm

so what this isn’t the original. Friday the 13th is Jason. No Jason no Friday. That’s like a nightmare without Freddy.

        • Manic Exorcism
Manic Exorcism January 13, 2014 at 8:21 pm

This is almost true, but he DID show up in the end for one final scare. The only one without Jason was Part V and it was an embarrassment to the franchise. And by this time it’s well established that he IS the killer in the Friday series. Why make a movie without him now? At this point why call it Friday the Thirteenth? Friday 13th movies are JASON movies. It’d be like making Nightmare on Elm Street without Freddy. We watch these franchise series to cheer on our favorite masked maniacs.

Cameo Camyl Massey January 13, 2014 at 10:19 pm

Even though in the end it was his mother who was the killer, she had gone into a split personality where she believed she was also her son Jason!

      18. Brett Evans January 13, 2014 at 12:49 pm

well if they are sticking with the first person idea i can it happening in the point of view of jason that way you have him but dont actually see him

      19. Ben Phelps January 13, 2014 at 12:55 pm

Scott Blander, the best Friday was the original which did not have Jason as the killer, so your point is invalid. If this movie is to be a true reboot then it should not have Jason as the killer. Regardless, remakes and ‘reboots’ need to stop being made all together

      20. Trevor Schmitt January 13, 2014 at 12:56 pm

Jesus Christ, how many of you have actually watched the original Friday the 13th? After reading a lot of these comments I’m going to guess very few.

        • The Mighty Deadpoolio January 13, 2014 at 7:59 pm

Well your right to a certain extent, if you claim to think that Friday was the spectacular achievement in film making LMAO it wasn’t…….But at the same time it kinda sounds like they want to try to reboot the damn thing, this rebooting things is getting annoying…..I don’t need to hear about how Batman became Batman again or Superman or even Jason not that there was any real clear reasoning behind Jason just magically appearing in 2

        • Jeff Mealey January 13, 2014 at 11:56 pm

You don’t know who Jason’s Dad was. Only his insane mom!

        crazy…. :/

      22. Pat Noon January 13, 2014 at 1:00 pm

The Kevin Bacon reference would make sense if Bacon wasn’t denying publicly that he was even involved in the first Friday the 13th. As it stands now, he has disowned it.

        • The Mighty Deadpoolio January 13, 2014 at 8:01 pm

Well lets be honest the Friday the 13th movies are shit all of them…..Peope don’t watch them for their amazing story telling and academy award winning acting, BUT at the same time it’s not like Kevin Bacon is some amazing actor who has been in so many amazing films that he can sit back and deny certain movies

      23. Carey Rozon Virgilio January 13, 2014 at 1:02 pm

Regardless that mrs vorhees is the original killer, Friday the 13th and Jason go hand in hand , a Friday without Jason is just silly

        SAY WHAT!!!!!

WTF..this is bs friday the 13th aint nuthang wo jason voorhees ..hopefully theyll change their minds n if they do get kane hodder to play as Jason Voorhees

      28. Patrick Blackburn January 13, 2014 at 1:18 pm

How do you figure they destroyed A Nightmare on Elm Street ? The original followed except 2 and the remake had Freddy but had to go a different way cause of original script copy rights

      29. Jackie S Chapman January 13, 2014 at 1:19 pm

Nobody is this dumb. no Jason worked on the first one only because he didn’t exist yet. Now it would just be suicidal for the movie if u want to make a different movie make one. Just change the title

      30. Hellsing ThirteenThirteen January 13, 2014 at 1:30 pm

Well…..if they are gonna remake/reboot/refuck Friday The 13th, I’m glad that they are taking Jason out of it. Atleast they won’t make me hate him. Also….I think that the remake….since it was a remake should’ve had Mrs. Voorhees doing all the killing anyways.

      31. Lee Vervoort January 13, 2014 at 2:11 pm

The Lashman will be out soon, and this ain’t no remake. We’re going back to the true 80s slasher baby.

      32. Nick Jensen January 13, 2014 at 2:13 pm

Jason WAS in the original. Last scene, pulls the girl into the lake…and authorities couldnt find any “boy in the lake”. Ch-ch-ch-ch…..ah-ah-ah-ah.

      33. Nick Jensen January 13, 2014 at 2:15 pm

But they did make Halloween 3 without Michael Myers…and it was terrible.

        • The Mighty Deadpoolio January 13, 2014 at 8:04 pm

Um NO Season of the Witch was not terrible….It’s only terrible to people who A) think it’s cool to hate it because it didn’t have Michael Myers or B) are so closed minded they hate it because again it didn’t have Michael Myers….Anyone who ACTUALLY watched it without immediately crying about Michael Myers knows it’s an alright flick, it clearly should have just been called Season of the Witch

      34. Evan Sanders January 13, 2014 at 2:18 pm

Well don’t condemn the movie just yet I mean you have to be bold and daring if you to make a true impact in the horror industry nowadays with that said I don’t agree with the movie but im open minded and want to see what they come up with

      35. Jamie Cee January 13, 2014 at 2:18 pm

I might wont be watch this if there no jason voorhees

      36. James Bos January 13, 2014 at 2:19 pm

I’m sure they are just messing with people. I would be fine with a found footage film as long as it’s a bunch of stupid ass teenagers trying to find proof of Jason and then he muffs them up.

        • Matt Khourie January 21, 2014 at 12:59 am

          Dont count on it. ..

      37. Jarod Ambrose January 13, 2014 at 2:21 pm

The articles they cite didn’t confirm any of this. It’s all speculation at this point. both about Jason and the lost footage thing…

      38. Travis Shaw January 13, 2014 at 2:28 pm

Damn, this is a real letdown.

      39. Rick January 13, 2014 at 2:31 pm

Halloween did this with Part III…. It flopped. Need I say more?

      40. RedOwl January 13, 2014 at 2:32 pm

Well, this is already a complete failure. NOBODY cares about Mrs. Voorhees anymore, it’s all about her son! This is a joke.

      41. Joey Matera January 13, 2014 at 2:47 pm

        i will not allow this.

      42. Jamie Cee January 13, 2014 at 2:50 pm

Friday the 13th found footage sound like gonna be flop movie like Halloween: Resurrection.

      43. Luis Quiroz January 13, 2014 at 2:55 pm

What the point then if Jason not in it

      44. Tim Bell January 13, 2014 at 3:23 pm

Guess I’m old-school when I say this, but I thoroughly enjoyed the POV shots of Pamela in the first Friday the 13th. It’s a film style I can appreciate. I just wish they’d figure out what the hell they’re doing with this franchise and get on track with it. Why did they bother reboot it back in ’09 if they’re thinking of doing it again?

        • Jeff Mealey January 14, 2014 at 12:00 am

I seriously thought they were going to totally redo the original in that God awful remake. Then when Mrs. V gets it early in the film I figured they’d expand and show maybe what Jason was doing from age pre-teen until his adulthood. But nope. Instead they just turned it into a typical horror slasher film. That’s all good, but not when you already have 10 other films just like it.

      50. Matt Hanke January 13, 2014 at 6:01 pm

Jason may not have really been a major part of the first Friday, but now he has come to symbolize everything about it!! You can’t do a Friday movie without him! It’s like Halloween without Michael Myers, Nightmare without Freddy, Texas Chainsaw without Leatherface!!! It’s just not done!

      51. Lisa Walker January 13, 2014 at 6:12 pm

Say it isn’t so joe say it isn’t so.NoJason no Friday 13th.

      52. Wrath of Colin January 13, 2014 at 6:35 pm

Whatever happened to blogs proofreading before publishing? What a sad state online ‘journalism’ has become. It’s not ‘wont’, it’s ‘won’t.’ A mistake made more than once. While you could say it’s trivial, you are supposed to be writers, so why not try harder?

        • Herner Klenthur January 13, 2014 at 10:40 pm

Hey Wrath of Colin we are volunteer bloggers who write in our spare time. We do not claim anywhere to be journalists. Am I excusing the fact I used slang? Yep I guess I am. S

I love horror and my writing is the writing of a fan boy with a passion for the genre and no ‘writing background’.

I try everyday to improve and take criticism to heart.

      53. Sean Maclam (@Grindhousegod) January 13, 2014 at 6:55 pm

Are you people really that dumb?! first friday the killer was in P.O.V for the whole thing, you don’t see Mrs. voorhees till the end. there has been 2 1/2 movies already where jason wasn’t the killer. Do you guys even watch horror movies earlier than 2000? if they did a Mrs.V movie i’m fine.

      54. Grey Thedarkhours January 13, 2014 at 7:23 pm

Annie Adamson I don’t think we should panic yet, he may have misspoke or maybe they are trying to remake the first film properly?

      55. Spencer Moyer January 13, 2014 at 8:08 pm

If there gunna remake the first Friday they need to have the mother as the killer because that’s just the way it is, this is the story of Friday the 13th!

      56. Billy k January 13, 2014 at 8:30 pm

For the love of all things good and pure, please stop with the reboots, remakes, and re-imaginings. Make a frikkin Jason movie. Write a script for it, and make the darned thing stand alone. Or at least let the franchise die as the corny awesome slasher masterpiece it was (until the dumb F%^cks thought they could remake it).

      57. Allen Mozak January 13, 2014 at 8:32 pm

Without Jason it will Tank like “Season of the Witch”. He will be back soon after!

      58. Efren Villa January 13, 2014 at 8:41 pm

        Never get rid of him.

      59. Jamie Martin January 13, 2014 at 8:41 pm

This is just terrible!! Leave it up to some dumb ass Hollywood people to continue to fuck up another classic horror movie..I hate how they try to redo a classic film and butcher it with CGI and shit story lines…go make another SCREAM movie or fuck up another Childs Play movie you stupid fucks, because those the types of movies they consider good horror these days.

      60. Matt Kunka January 13, 2014 at 8:53 pm

Reboot it. Found footage the hell out of it. I dont care just dont get rid of jason

      61. Jeff Mealey January 13, 2014 at 11:55 pm

I believe there were two Friday the 13th films where Jason wasn’t the actual killer. One where the paramedic was and of course the other where his Mom was the killer. Come to think of it … 3. The one where Jason’s soul made people do it. I’d say ALL but the original (with Jason’s Mom) were horrible.
I’m seeing “Season of the Witch” all over again, without Jason there’s no Friday the 13th etc.
It’s one thing to create a fresh, new idea and storyline. It’s another thing to do this and call it something just for ticket sales. Not too sure about this one. The recent remake of Friday the 13th looked great up until the opening credits started then it just became cheesy. Even the kills were boring.
I won’t even wait til this is on cable or rental.

      62. Jennifer Warner January 14, 2014 at 12:10 am

Here’s an idea…come up with something original, Hollywood, instead of constantly remaking classics, and turning them into pieces of crap! They are classics for a reason!

      63. Jennifer Warner January 14, 2014 at 12:16 am

Enough of these “found footage” and POV movies too. There hasn’t been a fairly decent FF movie ever, aside from MAYBE The Blair Witch Project, and the POV thing has been played out to death (V/H/S, V/H/S 2, Cloverfield…the list goes on and on). Just use your brains and come up with something new. Just STOP remaking classics and turning them into garbage and turning the horror genre into some schlocky joke.

      64. Jeff Mealey January 14, 2014 at 12:22 am

Maybe “Smokey” and “Debo” will be in it and they can mix the movie “Friday and Friday the 13th. FRIDAY – da 13th! They’ll be smoking blunts while running around chopping up people!

      65. Nick Barton January 14, 2014 at 12:53 am

So nobody is more annoyed they are going the found footage route? That is a lame premise that I wish would begin to phase out in franchises. That being said Friday the 13th without Jason (and I know he wasn’t technically in the first one since I saw it in theaters originally) I’m not interested in watching a movie from the killer’s perspective and the whole premise worked well over the years this needs to find a new perspective just not without the main killer.

      66. Kurt Webb January 14, 2014 at 1:25 am

This film was intended to be “a real scary movie” and at the same time make the audience laugh. Friday the 13th began its life as nothing more than a title. Initially, A Long Night at Camp Blood was the working title during the writing process, but Cunningham believed in his “Friday the 13th” moniker, and quickly rushed out to place an advertisement in Variety . Worried that someone else owned the rights to the title and wanting to avoid potential lawsuits, Cunningham thought it would be best to find out immediately. He commissioned a New York advertising agency to develop his concept of the Friday the 13th logo, which consisted of big block letters bursting through a pane of glass.

      67. Paul Reeves January 14, 2014 at 1:46 am

So they’re doing a found footage Ft13 re-boot that doesn’t even have Jason? Anyone else wanna get a legal injunction to shut this shit down?

      68. Roderick L. Beasley January 14, 2014 at 2:13 am

Yeah because that worked great for Halloween 3

      69. Screenwriter January 14, 2014 at 2:36 am

Seriously, horror fans are the most opinionated, cynical people. Get off your asses and write your own movies, chances are they’ll go nowhere, and as I wait to hear from FIVE producers at the moment, that pleases me.

See? The snide attitude is off-putting, correct?

      70. James McDonald January 15, 2014 at 12:58 am

What on earth? This movie idea sounds so bad now. A Friday the 13th movie without adult Jason is like Halloween 3: Season of the Witch without “Michael Myers”. A Robin without his Batman. What is the plot of this “found footage” shaky-cam movie? I would only guess one of the campers or a tenant in a Paranormal house is going to obtain the evil spirit of Jason and start axing people or steal a baby? Many of us are 50 or over and still would watch the Friday the 13th movies as we saw the first one in 1980. With the re-boot in 2009, you managed to open the eyes of many young movie goers, but not making another Friday the 13th after the 2009 film was a big mistake. You have to keep the momentum up while the iron is hot.

how an earth is this a reboot? they only rebooted it in 2009!!! i am a huge fan of the 2009 movie, i was under the assumption this was friday the 13th 2 not a friday the 13th prequel without possibly having jason! terrible decision and they will lose big bucks at the box office if they choose the shoddy camera found footage without jason.. and if it shot like maniac was i’ll kill myself!!

Also keep in mind that at the very beginning of the previous remake of F13th, they had ALREADY alluded to and presented the mini-backstory w/scenes of Mrs.Voorhees being shown as the original killer before spinning it off into Jason’s aftermath. So what’s the plan for this film, exactly? Re-imagine a whole new part 1 or re-tell it again? Or do they plan on making an urban legend-type, found footage rehash (something akin to the painfully dreadful Halloween Resurrection aka Busta’s Revenge *shrugs*) set sometime after the last F13th, where there could be glimpses of Jason but no actual images unless some type of twist ending is revealed?

Fans also remember just how poorly regarded & disappointing F13th V: A New Beginning was because the REAL Jason was actually missing from the entire movie. So it bears mentioning that something similar might not have any real chance of success unless its cleverly scripted AND intelligently executed if that rumor regarding Jason is true. And please, PLEASE don’t tell me they thought about pulling a “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare” for the F13th franchise……the reason that movie was so great besides having a fantastic premise, was because of the careful investment & beloved regard for the series’ principal characters, namely Heather Lagenkamp and Robert Englund, which is something F13th doesn’t have going for it.

Hate to say it though, but this next F13th installment might end up being more identical to last year’s very silly Texas Chainsaw 3D, rather than the modest collective efforts of either Evil Dead or Carrie, or the bold visual interpretation of Maniac. RIP Jason

Yes, jason did kill in the first movie. The fifth movie, he was in a dream sequence but wasnt “actually in the movie” or was it a jarvis hallucination? Or both?

It goes back to when Jason was a hockey goalie.

Perhaps this rehash (Which I can’t wait for) will be a little bit like Psycho. Maybe the mother had a son, he died, and she goes into a PTS where she creates an illusion that her son is well enough alive and physically there, but it’s all her doing in the end. Sort of like how Norman Bates creates the image that his mother is still alive, but she’s clearly dead, and he has lost his mind. I like that idea!

The series now has a chance of being good.

It also says “I don’t know which Jason we’re going to have.” Meaning they could have it focus on baghead Jason or hockey mask Jason

the very first Friday the 13th did not have Jason in it so it doesn’t matter
