Relive the Magic of Jaws: The Ride

Jason McDonald

This past January 2nd marks the two year anniversary of Universal Studios Orlando closing down “Jaws: The Ride”.  While it may have been a simple attraction, it had a lot of history with with the park having opened way back on June 7th, 1990.

If you never got a chance to experience the attraction while it was thriving and active, we have a video down below which gives you the full ride experience.  It was put together by Ricky Brigante over at Inside the Magic and it’s a wonderfully cut video that features a bit of the movie’s classic soundtrack.

As an interesting side note, both “Jaws” and “Jaws: The Ride” shared a similar rocky start.  It’s a well known anecdote that the mechanical shark used in the “Jaws” movie was almost always broken.  However, the ride also had it’s own technical difficulties during it’s debut.  In fact, it was so bad that people had to be evacuated from the attraction on almost a daily basis.  Universal Studios eventually sued the original designers of the attraction and basically had to redesign the ride in order to get it functioning.  What you’ll see below is the ultimate fruit of those labors.

They left the shark statue as a tribute (so I’ve read), the replaced Amity with Hogsmead village, part of “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter”, I have mixed feelings about that.

I am a die-hard Jaws fan who never got to experience the ride. To add insult to injury it was shut down on my birthday. :/

They never should have gotten rid of this attraction and they need to bring King Kong back like they have in California. Universal Orlando seems to be focusing more on younger people and kids now than adults.

No, Universal did not replace the Jaws ride and “Amity” area with Hogsmeade Village, as someone stated above. The Hogsmeade Village area is within the Islands of Adventure park, taking up an expanded area of what was formerly the medieval section of the “Lost Continent” island. The Jaws ride and Amity area at the original Universal Studios Orlando park were demolished to make way for the new “Diagon Ally” expansion of the “Wizarding World of Harry Potter”, which is supposed to open in the summer of 2014. A real shame they had to get rid of the Jaws ride; as dated as the technology had become, there was an innocent charm to that ride that I always loved…

I rode it twice while we were at the park back in the early 2000s. Best part of the entire Universal experience.
