Annapurna Pictures new Terminator movie ‘Terminator Genesis’ is finally getting ready to begin filming and this is good news for fans of the billion dollar franchise.
The production team are heading to New Orleans and will begin shooting on April 21st according to a tweet by Production Weekly.
Alan Taylor who most recently directed the comic book flick ‘Thor’ has been tapped to direct the reboot of the franchise with the stunning Emilia Clarke starring as Sarah Connor and Jason Clarke starring as John Connor. ( I have no idea if there is any relation between the two actors ).
Emilia Clarke is of course best known for her work in Game of Thrones. Playing Sarah Connor is no easy task because unlike some films were women are relegated to mindless eye candy Sarah Connors character is complex and filled with depth. Not just anyone can step up and play that role well and I for one think Emilia Clarke can. Her work on Game of Thrones has shown she has the ability to evolve her character and play a complex role while still maintaining her femininity.
I am excited to see what Emilia brings to the character of Sarah Connor but there is no denying she will have her hands full trying to fill the boots that Linda Hamilton wore.
Although Kyle Reese has not yet been cast Boyd Holbrook, Tom Cocquerel, Wilson Bethel, Sam Reid, and Jai Courtney are said to be among the actors that are trying to snag the role of Kyle Reese.
In Terminator Genesis our favorite ex-Governor Arnold will also return and according to The Examiner his role will be as game changing as when he returned in Terminator 2 as the hero. They say that writers Patrick Lussier ( Drive Angry 3D) and Laeta Kalogridis ( Avatar ) are looking to stun fans with a massive plot twist. Quote;
Incredibly, Arnold Schwarzenegger may not play the role of a machine in the next film, but a potentially heroic human figure in or close to the Connor family.
One theory is that Schwarzenegger’s remarkable ability to protect the Connor family in the 1940s or 1950s with antiquated weaponry by today’s standards ultimately inspired the machines to develop a terminator in his likeness that was eventually sent to 1984 when Sarah Connor was first targeted for termination.
The idea that Skynet has given up on trying to kill the elusive Sarah Connor and instead is going to go back and kill her grandparents is definitely an interesting concept but the timeline doesn’t work well unless they plan to do three different ‘time jumps’ in the same movie.
Jason Clarke who is playing John Connor is 20 years old than Emilia Clarke which to me indicates that Terminator Genesis will at least have some basis in the future war with Skynet. Emilia being so much younger than Clarke also means we will be jumping at least 20 years back in time to replay the relationship between Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor.
Adding in a third jump back to the 50’s to incorporate Arnold is not going to work in a single film. Unless of course Annapurna and their team are actually serious about a trilogy and are willing to be patient and spread the story over three films like they should instead of cramming every ‘whizz bang’ into the first film to maximize box office draw.
I think that Annapurna Pictures needs to look at what worked in the original film and take the entire franchise back to its roots. Make Termiantor scary again. Make Terminator Genesis dark and gritty and since they say it’s a three-part trilogy do that. Do not get so focused on making the first film work that you sacrifice the trilogy. If this is indeed a trilogy then do that! Plan on three films up front and instead of doing what the first film franchise did with ridiculous sequels that tried to fit the original vision make a story that unfolds over three films telling the story of the Rise of Skynet and the fall of Mankind.
What do you want in Terminator Genesis? Where would you like to see the plot go? Should Arnold be returning? Do you want to see The Rock do battle with the Connors as a new type of Terminator?
Terminator Genesis will hit theaters in July of 2015. Oh and we almost forgot to remind you of those rumors of who will play the villain. The ROCK is rumored to be playing the big bad Terminator in Terminator Genesis. Yep…. that might happen!
