Updates on “The Purge 2″, “Friday the 13th”, and “Nightmare on Elm Street”

This post is an update bananza, everything must go! In an interview with Crave Online, producer Brad Fuller opened up about the future of some of their horror franchises.  Among the mentioned films include “The Purge 2″, “Friday the 13th”, and “Nightmare on Elm Street”.

Earlier this week I speculated that “The Purge 2″ would be given a much larger setting than what we saw in the first film.  So much so, that it might change the tone of the film.  It seems like that speculation might be heading in the right direction.  Here’s what Brad had to say about the upcoming sequel.

. . . the sequel to The Purge delivers on the promise of the original in that we’re not staying in the house. It’s not a home invasion movie. This is you’re out in the streets with people purging and a group of people who get stuck in the middle of it and have to get from point A to point B.

And what of the lead actor Frank Grillo?  What sort of role will he play in this new film?  Fuller describes him as being “. . . a grizzled guy who’s on a mission and he’s the strong, silent type who kind of discovers a misfit group of people who he helps out.”

From there the conversation steers towards “Friday the 13th”.  Over the past few months and weeks there’s been growing rumors that the next film in the series will be done in the style of “found footage” films.  Is there any truth to the rumor?  Fuller gives a bit of clarity on the issue.

It’s something that we’re looking at, yeah. I never know because it depends on the story and what the story is. It’s been reported, that’s something that we’re looking into but I can’t tell you definitively that that’s what the movie is.

When asked about the possibility of Derek Mears returning to the role of Jason, Fuller remarked that “I don’t know because I don’t know if we’re going to have Jason, I don’t know which Jason we’re going to have.”  Now, don’t get too excited, Fuller might’ve simply misspoke.  There’s precedent for the “Friday the 13th” series not featuring a real Jason, but I feel pretty certain that’s not what he meant here.

And, finally, Fuller touched on another franchise that has been dormant for a while now: “Nightmare on Elm Street.”

You know what? I haven’t heard a thing. It’s a little bit disappointing. We were very proud of that movie. It was Rooney Mara’s first starring role. In terms of pure box office, I think that’s our highest grossing film worldwide. I’d love to do another one but I feel that way about all of our films. We don’t jump into these films unless we actually loved the characters or the story. I’d love to make Freddy Krueger movies every couple years. It’d be fantastic.

With nothing in the pipeline for Freddy Krueger, it might be some time before we hear anything about him again.  It’s unfortunate, but with the last film receiving a divided reception it might be best that Freddy is taking a long sabbatical.  With time, someone might find the proper way to bring that film series back to it’s roots.
