Will We Ever See Another ‘Blair Witch Project’ Sequel?

Chris Savage

Blair Witch ProjectWay back in 1999, a little indie horror flick by the name of The Blair Witch Project, hit the scene. There soon after it exploded into a global phenomenon, found-footage was what everyone wanted and to this day many still do. I loved it, it was definitely an experience and one that I shall never forget.

Then a sequel came along, Book of Shadows, and I just couldn’t get into it. It just wasn’t for me, but I know many of you like it and it has also, in its own right, became some what of a cult classic. Then, it went dead. Fans of the franchise obviously wanted another sequel and the years went by and nothing.

Now, several years later, Lionsgate own the rights to the Blair Witch franchise and basically the ball is in their court, so could we see another sequel? Well, recently Movies.com spoke with co-creator of the franchise, Eduardo Sanchez, about the possibility of another sequel.

When asked if Lionsgate have plans for a sequel to Blair Witch, Sanchez replied with the following;

Lionsgate owns the property, so it’s obviously up to them right now. We’ve been talking to them for the past four or five years about doing it, but there’s nothing really in the works right now with us. But I think you’re right and maybe just being back at Lionsgate will help move things forward on another Blair Witch movie.

Sanchez continues;

Our plan for the sequel is definitely not doing a found-footage movie. It took a while for people to just figure out what Blair had done; I’m not sure why. The film was so experimental and kind of came out of nowhere so people didn’t know what to think of it and weren’t sure if that style could be repeated.

For me personally, I think Blair Witch was so unique for its time it didn’t need any sequels but as fans its just natural for us to clamor for more. So, are you guys interested in more Blair Witch? If so, what would you like to see?

Short bus brilliant…..Or I suppose better than smashing your face with a hammer, but then again you might even need to consider the hammer as opposed to watching blair witch

Hey now, Blair Witch was cool, esp when it came out, no one knew it was a hoax until people starting to try to unravel the mystery. That’s a good movie. Soooo, many people got so into that flick it was the chit. Stop playing and lying to yourself. You see it NOW it isn’t much but YOU must not of been there when it was being released. That’s what really counted. The only thing I hate NOW about it was that it was the pioneer for boogersnot crying. Every since she let that boogie out, everyone has been doing it to death. I am QUITE tired of seeing everyone’s boogers!

“Our plan for the sequel is definitely not doing a found-footage movie.” This worries me a bit. Book of Shadows was awful.

Mite as well, they are doing sequels of everything else! and i liked both blair witch movies!

      6. Earlette Bonner March 25, 2014 at 6:31 pm

God I hope not. The hype was scarier than the movie itself.

      7. Randall Bruce March 25, 2014 at 6:40 pm

As long as it not video crap

      8. Gregory S. Stubits March 25, 2014 at 6:45 pm

Rob Zombie should direct it there is. I like his twist of artistic reality.

      14. Steven Delaney March 25, 2014 at 8:51 pm

        First one is so overrated.

      15. Jim Hill March 25, 2014 at 9:03 pm

I liked the second one a lot actually. Some of the acting was corny but that’s not so atypical in even the greatest horror films,

      16. Jason Farrell March 25, 2014 at 9:24 pm

        Hope not

      17. Peter Wolff March 25, 2014 at 9:37 pm

I must admit the hype at that time surrounding the film was amazing, and the reaction too was
what the hell was that, it did frighten a whole generation of horror fans and the other side of the coin was complete crap, i enjoyed the movie, there actually was a sequel can’t quite remember
the title it was a shocker. To me there is nothing better than the original.

      18. Brian O'blivion March 25, 2014 at 11:26 pm

Eduardo Sanchez said they aren’t making a new Blair witch.

Lets hope not – the first movie gave me wicked head aches and the second was sum what over played

      25. Justin Evans March 26, 2014 at 5:33 am

A new team camping out at the Blair Witch Site, and they disrespect the camp site by partying

      26. Jefferson Hodgdon March 26, 2014 at 12:49 pm

Halloween Mike’s Horror Everyday, honestly, yeah. I would rather see another Sharknado movie. I’d rather laugh at a movie than fall asleep during it.

      27. Brentley James March 26, 2014 at 6:36 pm

Im probably the only one that liked both movies. So the answer is yes.

It was good for its time, late 90s where should leave it. I believe it could have been a cult classic but they fucked it up with a sequel

      30. MaximeFrance March 27, 2014 at 2:32 pm

So because it worked we NEED a sequel? No thank you.
The first one was awesome and offered something new that has now been totally overused and another found footage about a witch somewhere wouldn’t be…a surprise.
As for BookOfShadows, I remember HATING it at first and then slowly came to my senses and found some interesting takes on it.
But, we certainly do not need or want a third one.

      31. bearmon2010 March 28, 2014 at 2:46 pm

No! It was hoax and do not need to see the sequel either.
