This will either ignite fans with flames of passion or hatred, I’m not entirely sure yet. But for those of you that have been dying for a new “Predator” film, there’s some good news. A new film is finally in the works, but it’s a reboot.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Fox is looking to reboot the “Predator” franchise with the next film. And, while fans will bristle over the idea of a reboot, perhaps the talent involved will ease the sting. Director/writer Shane Black has been tapped to write the treatment for the reboot and he will direct the film. “Monster Squad” co-writer Fred Dekker will handle the script duties.
After breaking out big in the 80’s with “Lethal Weapon” and “Monster Squad”, Black’s popularity started to fade for a bit until he recently directed the big budget feature “Iron Man 3.” Along with the upcoming “Predator” reboot, Black is pegged to direct a film based on “Doc Savage” and “Deathnote.”
Are you excited for a new “Predator” film, even if it is a reboot? Seems strange to call it a reboot, it’s not like the “Predator” franchise has a rich and complex narrative. They could really get away with saying “OH, this is a new Predator in a new jungle hunting a bunch of new soldiers.” An even better idea would be to do that scrapped Arnold Schwarzenegger sequel where Dutch is being hunted by a Predator in a city during a blizzard. Arnold seems to be all for dredging up old franchises.
Ah well, I’m just glad we’re finally getting a new “Predator” and I’m excited that someone like Shane Black is involved. I can’t wait to see what he does with the iconic hunter.
