First Plot Details for the Mummy Reboot?

Jason McDonald

Universal has some big plans for it’s classic monster franchise and the first film leading the charge is the upcoming “Mummy” reboot.  Although, apparently, the recent “Dracula Untold” film might’ve been the spearhead for the expansive narrative that Universal is hoping to create with their monsters.  I bring that movie up because some plot details have been revealed for the “Mummy” reboot and you might be able to connect the dots between the two movies if you’ve seen “Untold.”

Website “Superhero Movie News” somehow got their hands on a script for the proposed “Mummy” reboot and it sounds like the film is ditching the classic vibe of previous entries and going for a modern update.  Here’s how the site describes the opening scene of the film (spoilers ahead obviously):

The story follows Navy Seal Tyler Colt and his mission in the Iraqi desert to find a group of terrorists hiding out in a bunker. To him and his teams surprise the terrorists within the bunker turn out be nothing more then some grave robbers who have all magically died. Upon entering the bunker Tyler and his team also succumb to some mystical forces out of their control. They soon realize the bunker they have infiltrated is actually a centuries old tomb. Mayhem erupts as all the Navy seal members start turning on one another and are captivated by the forces within the tomb. Tyler is the only one to make it all the way deep within the tomb alive to find an Black Iron Sarcophagus. It’s marked with Egyptian symbols like the Ankh and Eye of Horus. Here Tyler is entranced by the forces to open up and release what is inside. But after placing his hand onto the sarcophagus he is immediately stabbed in the palm with a star shaped symbol. From then on his mind is cursed with visions of Ashurbanipal, King of Assyria…..The Mummy.

The website goes on to clarify that Tyler isn’t the actual Mummy, just someone with a mental connection to him and possibly the main protagonist of the film.  Other characters in the movie include archaeologist Jenny Halsey, billionaire Lorenzon Montanari, and leader of the Temple Brothers Malik.  I wonder if Malki will play a similar role that Oded Fehr played in the Brendan Fraser “Mummy” films, the title seems reminiscent of the Medjai.

So if this pans out to be true, how do you feel about a modern take on the “Mummy”? Does the premise interest you so far? Let us know in the comments below.

I don’t think it is a reboot, like that 1999 movie is also not a reboot or a remake. The plot for the original Mummy ( the one with Karloff on the photo) is very unique and different from every other Mummy sequel or adaptation.

These terms get thrown around by studios and writers (like myself) so much that they’ve sort of lost all meaning. I’ve always taken “reboot” to mean that they’re restarting a franchise. Remake would be like, as you said, if they tried to redo the story of the original Karloff film. That’s been my interpretation, but I could be wrong. I think if this was a different studio with no connection to an established Mummy film series, then you couldn’t call it a reboot.
