31 Days of Scares- #10 ‘Hellraiser’ Frank’s Resurrection

Jason McDonald

The 31 Days of Scares isn’t a countdown of the best horror movies.  In fact, it’s not even about the best movies. It’s simply about some of my favorite “scares” or scenes from horror movies and they’re in no particular order.  So there’s no need to debate countdown order. It’s pretty random.  With that said: on to the countdown!

It’s time to finally raise a little Hell on our countdown.  Today’s clip comes from the first “Hellraiser” film and is a practical effect that ranks among the best.  I’m talking about the scene where Frank is resurrected.

I find the “Hellraiser” series as a whole to be completely unsettling and creepy.  Between all the weird bondage, torture, and hellish imagery I find myself feeling a little worse for wear after watching a “Hellraiser” film.  Even when the hero wins it feels like a shallow victory when you look at what it cost to “win.” I wish I could express that overall feeling with one single clip, but I couldn’t think of a scene that expressed that despair that “Hellraiser” makes me feel.  So how about a spine tingling practical effect?

In this scene we’re reunited with a dirtbag named Frank who previously died in the attic.  And by died I of course mean ripped to pieces by chains from Hell.  It turns out all Frank needed to pull himself back together is a bit of blood.  After a drop of blood mingles with a bit of his, his body starts to reform.  It’s a bloody gooey mess as chunks of him reform piece by piece, resulting in a scene where this half-formed human emits this blood curdling baby scream.  It’s awesome.

Check out the scene below and be sure to recommend more scares for the final nine days of our countdown.

The scene is a bit slow moving but def gory. There is a somewhat similar scene at the end of the movie Doppleganger starring Drew Barrymore where her inner demons are released & split apart, and then merged back together again. An unexpected and freakish twist of the story, but certinaly one of the few highlights of that film. I thought that the other scene from Hellraiser, Jesus Wept aka the chain decapitation, was the scene which was going to be on the list, or at least be your bonus clip….
