31 Days of Scares- #13 ‘Friday the 13th’ He’s Still There

Jason McDonald

The 31 Days of Scares isn’t a countdown of the best horror movies.  In fact, it’s not even about the best movies. It’s simply about some of my favorite “scares” or scenes from horror movies and they’re in no particular order.  So there’s no need to debate countdown order. It’s pretty random.  With that said: on to the countdown!

I could’ve put “Friday the 13th” anywhere on this list, but it just seemed right to save it for scare number 13.  Cliche? Maybe, but sometimes you just have to do what feels right.

With a film series that expands eleven films and one crossover, how could I possibly choose which one to go with? Easy, I just picked the one that was actually kind of scary: the first one! Don’t get me wrong, I love the entire series, but the further it went in the sequel count the more comical and entertaining it became.  The first one, though, has some great genuine scares and benefits from being an unknown quantity.

If you’re seeing the original “Friday the 13th” for the first time you’re going into it not really knowing what to expect.  Sure you know it’s a slasher film, but it still has plenty of surprises that really catch you off guard.  You don’t know what kind of brutality to expect, there’s the revelation of the killer, and then there’s the scene I chose for today’s scare.

Throughout the movie you start to believe that Jason is the actual killer, but then the film throws you a curveball by revealing that Jason’s mother is the real killer and that Jason is definitely dead.  OR IS HE?!

This is like a double red herring and it’s done in a way that makes you question whether or not it really happened.  Does Jason really attack Alice at the end or is she just bonkers from everything that happened?  Of course, the sequels clear all that up, but when you see that movie without knowledge of the secrets it’s a great shock that leaves you with plenty of questions and one great final scare.  Check it out below.
