31 Days of Scares- #3 ‘Evil Dead 2’ Ash Goes Nuts

Jason McDonald

The 31 Days of Scares isn’t a countdown of the best horror movies.  In fact, it’s not even about the best movies. It’s simply about some of my favorite “scares” or scenes from horror movies and they’re in no particular order.  So there’s no need to debate countdown order. It’s pretty random.  With that said: on to the countdown!

With a new addition to the “Evil Dead’ franchise nearly upon us, I thought now would be the perfect time to reminisce about one of my favorite “Evil Dead” moments.  And while the title of this post is “Evil Dead 2”, I’m gonna go ahead and double dip and talk about two scenes from two different movies since they both compliment each other.

For many people the main centerpiece of the “Evil Dead” franchise is the over the top gore used in “Evil Dead” and to an even greater extent in “Evil Dead 2.” And it is quite wonderful to see blood geysers erupt all over people or for blood to just explode out of people’s eyeballs in a hilarious unnatural fashion. But what I always found unsettling about the “Evil Dead” series was not so much the gore, but the intentions of the gore: to drive Ash Williams crazy.

In the first “Evil Dead” we get a wonderfully creepy scene where Ash is the last man standing.  His best friend is messed up, his sister is locked in the basement, and his girlfriend is about to drop another surprise on him.  All this in the service of driving Ash mad.  It’s a very creepy and understated scene, especially by “Evil Dead” standards, that gives you the sense that Ash is doomed.

In “Evil Dead 2” we get the scene that I think the previous scene is really building towards. The inevitable unraveling of Ash.  All of his friends are gone, his hand has been chopped off, and now he’s just broken a chair.  This is the scene where Ash embraces the madness and, in my opinion, accepts the levels of insanity he’ll have to stoop to to survive.  Check it out below.
