31 Days of Scares- #30 ‘Halloween 3’- The Demonstration Scene

Jason McDonald

“Halloween 3: Season of the Witch” is largely considered the black sheep of the “Halloween” series, though I think in recent years people have started to come around to it and finally accept it for what it is. And what it is is a fine little Halloween tale that takes an innocent concept like Halloween masks and turns it on it’s head.

As we continue our countdown to Halloween with the 31 best horror movie scares I thought I’d give a little love too “Season of the Witch.”  While there are a lot of weird and creepy moments to be had in that movie I would argue that the best scene is when Cochran invites Dr. Challis to watch a demonstration of his new mask.

Up until this point the viewer isn’t too sure about what exactly Cochran’s evil plan is.  All we know is that, somehow, he’s going to kill us all.  As the scene starts we see the Kupfer’s, a typical middle America family, unknowingly enter a death trap.  And what a death trap it is! A kid’s head literally starts to melt and spew out snakes, spiders, and all sorts of horrible little insects.  It’s pretty damn repulsive.  On top of that there’s that pulsating music that makes me feel like I’m going insane the longer I hear it. Between the rapid cuts of chaos and the music, I find the whole scene to be pretty overwhelming and I think that’s what makes it so impactful as a horror movie scare.

Check it out below and let us know what you think.  Remember, if you want us to talk about your favorite horror movie scare let us know what it is in the comments.

Bonus scene! While not a scare, I have to give a special shout out Tom Atkins’ final scene. I’m talking about the scene where he’s desperately screaming “Stop it!” into the phone over and over again.  It’s a chilling way to end a movie.

Both are great scenes. The first makes you cringe with the visuals of what you see coming out of the mask – and what your brain fills in of what is going on INSIDE the mask. The second is intense in the frantic terror Atkins puts into it – he is so desperate!

An oldie but goodie – when mr sardonicus is unmasked. It’s reminiscent of the phantom of the opera scene but IMO far more horrifying.

I need to see this movie now. Avoided it because of all the bad stuff I’ve heard. I guess watching it as not a Halloween series movie might not be bad.
The only thing I didn’t like in this scene was the father trying to open the door. The way he did it was funny. The rest reminded me of my childhood.
