‘Toxic Avenger’ is Getting the Remake Treatment from a ‘Sausage Party’ Co-Director

On one hand I’m kind of surprised that someone would attempt to remake “The Toxic Avenger”, but on the other hand it makes complete sense given how popular R-rated comedies and super hero films have become.  It actually seems like the perfect time for Toxie to comeback and subvert the comic book genre.

Deadline is reporting that Conrad Vernon, the co-director of this years big comedy hit “Sausage Party”, has been tapped to direct a remake of “The Toxic Avenger.”  Mike Arnold (“Archer”) and Chris Poole are currently writing the script.  And of course Lloyd Kaufman will be involved as an executive producer.

What’s most interesting about the Deadline report is this key line about the project: “This version is a more grounded and mainstream telling of the story.”  That’s a little worrisome depending upon what they mean by making it “grounded.”  Obviously making it a mainstream hit is the goal here. Studios want to make money after all.  But attempting to make “The Toxic Avenger” grounded sounds like a betrayal of what those films were all about.  For now, i’ll reserve judgement given how ludicrous “Sausage Party” was, but I’m extremely curious to see how they bring Toxie to the modern world.
