This is a strange twist I wasn’t expecting. I heard some time ago that Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were working on a new Netflix show, but early descriptions made it sound like a lighthearted family drama. Turns out it might still be that, but with a hook we can sink our teeth into.
Speaking with USA Today Drew Barrymore revealed that her new show, “Santa Clarita Diet”, may actually be about zombies/cannibals. Originally the new show was pitched as being about a married realtor couple named Joel (Timothy) and Sheila (Drew) and their daughter Sheila (Liv Hewson) who find their lives turned upside down when Sheila undergoes a dramatic change. Here’s what that dramatic change entails according to USA Today:
But we can reveal that the “dramatic change” Sheila undergoes in the series opener is, in fact, death. And while they tend to their open houses and teenage daughter, the couple must sate Sheila’s unbridled id and undead hunger, first with raw meat and, eventually, the human kind.
So it sounds like she straight up becomes a zombie, though no one is really using that word in any of the descriptions. I’m guessing because Sheila won’t be a classic zombie in the sense that she’s stumbling around and moaning, but just a person with an uncontrollable hunger for human flesh. Probably in line with the character on “iZombie.”
And as if this show didn’t already have a cool enough cast, it’s also been revealed that Nathan Fillion will be starring as a rival realtor. The show also comes by way of Victor Fesco who worked on great shows like “Better Off Ted” and “Andy Richter Controls the Universe.”
The show is expected to debut on February 3rd, so a trailer shouldn’t be too far off. For now you can enjoy this new image revealed by Netflix.
