Universal Announces ‘Cult of Chucky’ Along with a Synopsis and Teaser

Jason McDonald

If you’ve been following the Twitter feeds of people like Fiona Dourif or Don Mancini then you know they’ve been teasing a new Chucky film since pretty much the release of the last Chucky film.  It was obvious it was going to happen, but when it would be announced was anyone’s guess.

Well, today EW has finally pulled back the curtain and revealed that a new Chucky film is indeed in the works and shooting of said Chucky film will begin this monday.  The film is titled “Cult of Chucky” and reunites many some important characters from Chucky lore. Here’s how EW breaks it down:

Cult of Chucky will catch up with the younger Dourif’s character at an asylum for the criminally insane where she has been confined for the past four years and is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when Nica’s psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all. Andy Barclay (Vincent), Chucky’s now-grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her he’ll have to get past Tiffany (Tilly), Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.

That’s right, Andy is back at it again.  Who would’ve guessed that his cameo in “Curse of Chucky” wasn’t just a cameo, but an Avengers-style set-up for future films.  And the return of Tiffany is always welcomed.  I’ll take more Jennifer Tilly wherever I can.

And with the film starting production so soon, that means there will be plenty of time to get it ready for a Halloween release.  While no firm date has been given, the film is expected to release this Fall on DVD, blu-ray, and digital HD.

To accompany the announcement Universal also released a brief teaser.  It’s nothing too glamorous and obviously features only old footage, but it’s a nice way to kick off the reveal. Check it out down below.
