‘Zombieland 2’ Still in Active Development According to Writers

It’s time for your annual “Zombieland” sequel update.  The last time I remember talking about the often mentioned sequel was around April 2016 when we thought the film was about to go into production that summer.  As you can tell by the lack of any further “Zombieland 2” news, that never came to pass.

However, the deafening silence you hear doesn’t mean that the project has been abandoned.  In fact, according to “Zombieland” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the film is in active development still.  In an interview with ComicBook.com the writers shared this choice bit of information about the current state of the project.

“It is [in active development],” Wernick said. “We’re trying to get it going. All of our cast have read the script and love it. Reuben [Fleischer] is signed on. It’s just a matter of making our cast deals and making it for a budget number. All the cast have become superstars now so, we made Zombieland with 20 million, so it’s trying to fit that financial model into the sequel model so it makes sense for the studio and being able to pay the actors what they now get paid and deserve to paid.”

The most interesting bit is “all of our cast.”  It seems like some of the original cast members have an active interest in the film, but I’m curious as to how many of them would actually return if asked.  Thankfully most of the cast seem game for pretty much anything despite their continuing success.

The real challenge, I have to imagine, is addressing how much time has passed in world of Zombieland.  It’s been nearly 10 years since the last film and everyone (especially Little Rock, aka Abigail Breslin, who is 20 years old now!).  So it’ll be interesting to see how that story deals with an older cast.

And if you think this is the last we’ll hear of “Zombieland,” don’t bet on it.  Reese and Wernick say they’re pestering the Sony studio boss to consider it just like they pestered Fox about “Deadpool.”  So maybe persistence will pay off again.
