Well, as someone who is always on the lookout for something different and unique, I see a variety of varying pieces, and I have to say that a guy in a duck mask slashing the throats of many was certainly something I never expected and certainly hearing the killer lyrics, “Quack, Quack, You’re Dead” just left me applauding their efforts.
Peter Mckeirnon who gave us the fun YouTube mini-series Dead Town, returns with his most unusual project to date; The Quacky Slasher. The short film gives us a little more background to the character, Michael Quackers, who was first seen in the short 14-second video Fowl Play, answering many questions but also leaving more to be answered.
The Quacky Slasher makes no attempt to hide the fact of their love of John Carpenters’ Halloween, as the titular character dons the same blue overalls, wields a bloody big knife and was committed to a psychiatric ward for 20 years. There’s even Michael Myers’ mask on display right next to Jason’s iconic hockey mask in one scene.
The film is just that, a guy in a duck mask killing people. However, Michael Quackers is somewhat of a vigilante, much like Batman, as he takes the law into his own hands, or is that wings? This duck is delivering justice one quack at a time, and it’s filled with dry, British humor which is often badly timed; think Monty Python or The League of Gentlemen.
It’s a fun little short which is filled with some slightly amusing characters, however, there is one which stood out and that is Michael’s mother played by Neil Gallagher, he even plays two more characters, but the mother is just brilliant, more of that please.
Considering this was shot on an extremely low-budget, there are some pretty killer practical effects on display here that once again shows what this tight-knit team is truly capable of, so kudos to you!
One thing I would have liked was if Michael Quackers talked, even if it was just a few words, but some badly spoken duck-puns as he murdered people is something I would love to see, perhaps that’s something for a sequel?
Anyway, The Quacky Slasher is an entertaining quirky short that comes in at just over 30 minutes, and with the film set to make its world premiere this September 16th, it’s definitely something to look out for, especially if you’re after a cheesy good time!

Oh, and stick around for the credits for Andy Coffey’s musical piece Quacky Slasher, it’s so bad it’s good.
