Threats of Protesting Lead to Cancellation of ‘Jeepers Creepers 3’ Premiere Screening

Jason McDonald

There’s no getting around it. Victor Salva was convicted of some pretty god awful things.  After some deep consideration I decided that I wouldn’t be covering “Jeepers Creepers 3” on the site.  I know that goes against what I’m “supposed to do,” but the great thing about this site is we can talk about whatever we want to talk to about.  I would not hold it against anyone else on this site if they wanted to talk about “Jeepers Creepers 3” just like I would not hold it against any other website, but I just have no desire to report on this film due to the circumstances surrounding the director.

So you might be asking why are we talking about it now?  Well, this post is not a promotional piece for the film.  It’s to show that if you believe strongly enough in something, you can make some kind of impact.  Even with something as seemingly frivolous as our entertainment.

On September 13th “Jeepers Creepers 3” was set to have its world premiere TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.  The premiere would have featured guests from all three films hosting a Q&A and would have been a double feature of the first and third film.  The screening sold out pretty quickly, so it was clear there was a great deal of interest in it.  However, TCL ultimately decided to cancel the screening due to numerous threats of protest. According to reports from HFN the theater was told that not only would people protest the premiere screening, but they would continue to protest every screening after that as long as the film was playing in theater.

Soon after receiving the protest notifications, the theater opted to pull the screening from their schedule and issued this response to people who had purchased tickets (also from HFN):

Dear Valued Customer,

We would like to inform you that due to events beyond our control, the screening event hosted by @Moviedude18 for “Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers 3” on Wednesday September 13, 2017 will no longer take place at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause your party. We have worked with Fandango to refund your purchase directly. You should see the refund in your account within the next few days. We would like to offer you free passes. You may redeem them at the box office upon your next visit by showing this email or we can mail them to you if you provide us with your mailing address.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience.

So there you go.  “Jeepers Creepers 3” will still have a release date and will be released in theaters for special screenings, but in this instance the film will not be shown.  So it goes to show that if you feel strongly enough about something, then say something.  Not everyone will agree with you, but you have a right vocalize your displeasure with something.  And maybe it’ll cause a change and maybe it won’t.

At the end of the day I won’t tell anyone to not see this movie or to see it. That’s their own decision to make. I can only tell you what I’m going to do. I probably won’t see this film, I probably won’t review it, and I probably won’t talk about it again after this.  If someone else on this site decides to do that, I support their right to do so.  And if people have criticisms, I will also support their right to air them.  At the end of the day this is a personal choice that we must all come to and should be willing to respectfully discuss.

And if you’re someone that has read this entire article and thought “Wait, what the hell did Victor Salva do?” Then, I’m really sorry, I probably should have mentioned that earlier. Simply put, he is a convicted child molester.  I don’t really want to go into the details here, but I invite you to read this excellent article from 1995 that goes into more depth and highlights another protest surrounding a film he released at the time called “Powder.”

Regardless of Salva’s past, I would still watch Jeepers Creepers 3. His probation is over with. More than 10 years have passed. In Los Angeles County, If it is a misdemeanor, he can go through the District Attorney to see if he is “eligible” fill out the 123.4 form. Wait for the notification of “Approved” (or “Not Approved”) and District Attorney to say “Congratulatons”. Then a court date would be set for him to appear before the Judge of Superior Court. This actually is a more “relaxed” trial. With legal defense (or public defender) he can prove he has not committed any crimes in 10 years or more. Most likely the judge will also say “Congratulations” and grant him the “Certificate of Rehabilitation”. This ends all conditions and any restrictions against him. If he wears a GPS device (not all have to) that ends as well. He will not have to go back to the police station to register anymore either. All he has to do is give a copy of the certificate to his local police station to the attention of the officer on his former case number and he is done.
If it is good enough for the District Attorney to dismiss it because it is an old misdemeanor and he is older now and it is good enough for the Judge of Superior Court to dismiss it, then let him get his life back together, let him be a director and film maker. There are no other crimes on him in 10 years or more is there?
Remember people, it is against the law to commit Revenge and Retaliation. He can put charges on you. He is free.
If he has a felony and the judge has not dismissed the charge or dropped it to a misdemeanor, then I do not know if it is possible to have it removed (thus the legal defense).
I do not know if Salva’s past conviction was in Los Angeles County, but there you have it.

I liked Jeepers Creepers and saw the sequel. I would like to see Jeepers Creepers 3 too. Jeepers Creepers has nothing to do with his former judicial past.

I’m sorry writer Jason McDonald. This is how I feel.

I suggest you read what the charges were, because I don’t think any were misdemeanors.

Also you’re analogy about presenting his certificate to the police couldn’t be less accurate. He’s a registered sex offender, he has to inform neighbors, there’s restrictions on where he can live.

The reality is you like these movies more than you care about the crimes he committed.

Just remember that the biggest monster isn’t on screen but in the director’s chair.

I totally agree with you. People need to stop picking and choosing who they want to crucify meanwhile so many others go on. Jeepers Creepers movie and All the cast members do not deserve to be punished. I want to see the movie as well. Your respone is both true and great! Thank you.

Both Leonardo {Da Vinci} and Michelangelo were pedophiles, as well; this hasn’t deterred people from enjoying their art.

Thanks for this. I won’t see this or cover it.

I saw Jeepers Creepers 1 and 2 and they always air. You think Victor is the only pervert in Hollywood? Haha… blind. I think the protests for the film have more to do with the creeper being a creep which does link to the mind of the director. JC1 and JC2 showed that in full detail, specially the first film. If you watch the start, you’ll kinda get the gist. I’ll still watch the film. If people really feel that way, stop the first and second film being aired on TV – idiots.

I am a big fan of the Jeeper Creepers movies, why can’t people let the past stay in the past. Let go. I am pretty sure that most people have things in their past that they wish that they could change, so why not let this man live his life and make his movies!! Grow a pair, he is human like everyone else. I will go and see the movie. He did nothing to me. Grow Up, please.
